The mission of the State University of New York Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome is to offer undergraduate
studies in professional, technical, and selected liberal arts fields, as well as graduate studies in selected academic
disciplines; to encourage participation in educationally-oriented community and public service; and to support
basic and applied research appropriate to its curricula. The Institute of Technology values and encourages
academic and intellectual achievement of the highest quality, broad access to persons motivated to pursue college
preparation and experience, the breadth and depth provided by a sound and comprehensive liberal arts education
and the technical competencies inherent to the applied disciplines. The Institute is committed to the integration of
these elements in a coherent program of higher learning. In addition, the Institute strives to provide a challenging,
culturally diverse, and supportive educational environment that fosters and encourages students' active participation
in residential life and student organizations, athletics and recreation, and cultural and social events.
The State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT) is a campus of the State University of New York located just north of Utica, New York in the town of Marcy.
Established by the SUNY Board of Trustees on June 14, 1966, SUNYIT is the State University’s only institute of technology. Originally a graduate and upper-division institution, the college offered classes in temporary locations and at extension sites for several years until the first buildings were constructed on the permanent campus in the 1980s. Planning for construction of three new major buildings is underway: a $13 million student center, a $20 million sports complex, and a $27.5 million technology center.
SUNYIT’s undergraduate degree majors/programs include: accounting, anthropology, applied mathematics, applied mathematics/electrical engineering, business, civil engineering technology, communication & information design, computer engineering technology, computer & information science, computer information systems, criminal justice, electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, finance, general studies, health information management, health services management, industrial engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, nursing, psychology, sociology,and telecommunications. A pre-law curriculum is also offered.
Graduate degree programs are: master of business administration in health services management, master of business administration in technology management, and master of science degree programs in accountancy, advanced technology, applied sociology, computer & information science, health services administration, information design and technology, telecommunications, adult nurse practitioner, family nurse practitioner, gerontological nurse practitioner, nursing administration, and nursing education. Accelerated BS/MS options are available in computer science, nursing, and telecommunications.
SUNYIT's intercollegiate athletic teams compete as the Wildcats in NCAA Division Three. Varsity sports include men’s and women’s basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, soccer, volleyball; men’s baseball; and women’s softball. In Spring 2005, the men's basketball team played two post-season games winning the first and losing the second. In 2006, the Men's Basketball team reached the SUNYAC championship game. SUNYIT left the SUNYAC Conference in May of 2008. Beginning in fall 2008, the Wildcats are joining the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
