DeVry University-Arizona

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

DeVry University and DeVry Institute of Technology are divisions of Devry Inc. , a private tertiary for-profit school composed of 23 major campuses, 3 subsidiary institutions, and numerous minor service centres in the United States and Canada. Member campuses offer programs from the Associate's to Master's level in professional studies and business administration. As of 2001, 5 of the top 10 producers of information technology degree graduates in the US were DeVry campuses.

History

DeVry Chicago opened in 1931 as the DeForest Training School, named after Lee DeForest, a colleague and friend of founder Herman A. DeVry. Since then the company has undergone a number of name changes. In 1966 a controlling share was acquired by the Education Group of Bell and Howell, which then sold that share to the Keller Graduate School of Management in 1987. DeVry acquired Becker Professional Review in 1996, Ross University in 2003, and the Deaconess College of Nursing in 2005. DeVry did not acquire rights to use the name "Deaconess College of Nursing", so it was renamed "Chamberlain" in 2006.

DeVry began operations in Canada in 1956.

Corporate Structure

DeVry Inc is a holding company for DeVry University, Ross University, Chamberlain College of Nursing, and Becker Professional Review. Becker Professional Review in turn holds a number of CPA training assets.

Curriculum

DeVry University offers courses in business administration, computer information systems, engineering, communication, bioinformatics , and management.

The university operates on a trimester course schedule and, if taken full-time year round, a student can graduate with a Bachelor's degree in about three years (depending on the program). Most degree programs are offered at both the Associate's and four-year Bachelor's level. In addition, the institution offers various certificate programs such as for specific subfields in Information technology.

College Advice

Yahoo
I will be graduating from Remington College, a two year college, soon this year and I am interested into going to another college to obtain my BA. Staff from Devery University has been coming to Remington to talk to us about how great Devry is and that they will accept all of our credits for the BA programs, which will take about 2 and a half years. Is this a good idea? Is Devry a really a great college? Or is the staff from Devry just bullshitting us?

DeVry never called itself Ivy League. It is however a publically traded company, and as such is a profit driven organization, in the business of technical and business education, with some excellent programs (CET, CIS, EET, ECT, etc.). DeVry is just one university, which also owns Keller Graduate School of Management, Becker Professional CPA Review, Ross University (medical and vet college in the Caribbean) and now also owns a nursing school, Chamberlain. DeVry started out as a trade school (DeVry Institute of Technology) and has had to fight the refigerator-fixing-technician label long after it earned University status and became accredited. The decreasing high-tech employment market in the US has led to a decline in enrollment in technical degree programs, placing a lot of pressure on admissions staff to pull people in. One can suspect that admission criteria would be less than stringent to encourage enrollment. Higer enrollment = more fees = more revenue = higher profits for shareholders. There is nothing wrong with making a profit, of course, as long as it's not at the cost of quality of education. What DeVry has done, however, to increase its profits, is lay off full-time, higher-cost, higher qualified faculty and staff to replace them with adjunct instructors on hourly wage, without benefits. So now you have students who have less than desirable entrance criteria being taught by less than desirable P/T adjunct what-have-yous. Not the most intellectually stimulating environment. Plus the management pretty much sucks, all the way to the top. Still some of the programs are quite challenging, and not so easy to pass, so check out your program quality, not the whole school! But that's not the whole reality; it's a great school to obtain a job - check out their Career Services, who are well connected with the relevant job market, all across the country. They have stats on the % of people that are placed in jobs in 30-60-90 days after graduation, in each discipline, with pretty impressive positions and even more impressive pay! The reason is most tech employers know that theory based academics can only mean you can probably conceptualize. But DeVry structure is such that it is based on a career-oriented teaching, which requires practical skills and hands-on training. Now there's both sides to the story. Make your call.
I don't know what to take for college this fall. My hobbies are drawing, surfing the internet, collecting rocks and coins. I am thinking about something dealing with computers, but will I be able to find a job in the field I study for if I take computers? Some have said that I should take Graphic design. I just don't know what to do. I have looked at the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Occupational Outook Handbook, just not enough. I even almost had Devry University talk my into doing their Game and Simulation course online. They said it would be good because I would learn the computer language C++ and the also said tha Devry has a 91% placement rate and that employers sometimes hire Devry students while still in school. I am so confused about my life. And I just turned 35. My friend said I could get loans from the government and have enough left over to pay for rent, etc.

Go with DeVry - I am a DeVry student and the school has REALLY good rep with the gaming industry. I know you may not know what you want to do with yourself but if you take a step in the direction of something - at least you can say you went somewhere. If you continue to just stand where you are and not take a change at something - you will surely go no where. You may as well just give up the idea of going to college and start flipping McBarf patties for a living. Remembered - Nothing ventured - nothing gained.. I wish you all the luck with your decision. If you still cannot decide what to do - enlist into the military and work in the IT field. At least that way you will get some kind of training that you can build on and you serve your country at the same time. Oh - not to mention the fact that the GI Bill is nice to have to help fund college... Your only obstacle - however - is your age. You will need a waiver. Good luck!
