Diablo Valley College School Description

Diablo Valley College is one of three publicly supported two-year community colleges in the Contra Costa Community College District. The main campus is located off Interstate 680 in Pleasant Hill, California and twenty miles east of UC Berkeley. A new San Ramon Valley Campus in Dougherty Valley opened its doors to students in November of 2006. DVC also has a center in downtown Walnut Creek.

DVC serves more than 22,000 students of all ages with these program options:

* Associate in Arts Degree
* Associate in Science Degree
* Transfer credit to four year colleges
* Articulation agreements with University of California and California State University Systems
* Vocational training
* Certificates of Achievement
* Lifelong personal improvement opportunities

The college officially began in 1949, in some of the most unlikely sites: high schools, banks, churches, even an old army camp. Called East Contra Costa Junior College, we moved to our present site in 1952, in ten steel buildings acquired from the government for $45 each. The cornerstone for the first permanent building was laid in 1953, and the name Diablo Valley College was adopted in 1958.

We've come a long way since those humble beginnings. Over one and a half million students have enrolled here since 1949! As we salute our heritage, we look forward to serving one of Northern California's most dynamic, education-minded areas for another 50 years.

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Diablo Valley College (DVC) is a two-year community college in Pleasant Hill in Contra Costa County, California.

DVC is one of three publicly supported two-year community colleges in the Contra Costa Community College District (along with Contra Costa College and Los Medanos College), and was first opened in 1949. Current enrollment is 26,000 students and it has 300 full-time and 370 part-time instructors.

DVC has satellite centers in San Ramon and Walnut Creek and also offers classes in other facilities in Concord, Martinez, Danville, and San Ramon.

Academics

Diablo Valley College is a popular choice for students to complete lower-division college requirements for frequently crowded California universities. In particular, DVC is a “feeder” college to the University of California, Berkeley; California State University, East Bay; and to St. Mary’s College. DVC ranks among the top five transfer colleges in California. In 2004, the top four transfer destinations were California State University, East Bay (formerly Hayward), San Francisco State University, UC Berkeley and UC Davis.

DVC also offers a variety of occupational specialties, including hotel/restaurant management, culinary arts, dental technology, and real estate. DVC has a very active speech and debate team.

Athletics

DVC has had famous athletes throughout its sports history, probably most recognized being Willie McGee, a former MLB National League MVP, who played for the DVC baseball team in the 1970s and Doug Davis, who pitches for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Demarshay Johnson, a former DVC Basketball star currently playing for Nevada, was named 1st team All-State for California for the 2004-2005 season. In that season, he led the entire state in blocks, averaging 5.2 per game.

Question: how long usually, is a summer course at community college?

I am in high school, and my summer vacation starts June 16th. I want to cram a few community college courses in my summer to make my college app look good. Does anyone here know when a summer course at community college in California usually starts? how many weeks does it usually last? If any of these questions could be answered, that would be great! And also, do you think it would help? by the way, i'm thinking about attending diablo valley college....im also considering many others too though....

There are usually several options for community college classes over the summer 1. the 3 week course. (you are in classes 5 days a week 6 hours a day). 2. the five week course (there are usually 2 five week courses over the summer. one right after the other. The classes are usually 4 days a week for 4 hours a day) 3. the ten week course (it occurs at the same time as the 2 five week courses. 4 days a week for 2 hours a day) 4. and the twelve week course that covers the whole summer. look up your specific schools online and see what classes are offered in what sessions. Usually colleges don't like you to take more than 12 credits a summer term. for you getting out of school in the middle of june. It might be too late for the first summer session, but you should be able to take 2 classes in the second summer session. I would recommend taking english 101, and some other basic class. Summer classes are shorter, and usually easier (because it is condensed) and I would recommend eng 101 because you have to hve it to graduate college... and regular english classes (non summer) are usually pretty full (like 25 to 30 students.)
