From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

State University of New York at Buffalo, commonly known as University at Buffalo (UB) is a coeducational public research university, which has multiple campuses located in Buffalo and Amherst, New York, USA. Offering 84 bachelor's, 184 master's and 78 doctoral degrees, it is one of the four comprehensive university centers within the State University of New York (SUNY) system.

The University at Buffalo is classified as a Doctoral/Research Universities–Extensive institution by the Carnegie Foundation. It is one of 62 elected members of the prestigious Association of American Universities. UB's alumni and faculty have produced a number of astronauts, Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners and other notable individuals in their fields.

The University at Buffalo identifies itself as a flagship institution in the State University of New York system. This identification is viewed in the context of SUNY as a two-tier system, and the four research universities in SUNY (i.e., Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Stony Brook) constitute the first tier. Buffalo houses the largest state-operated medical school and features the only state law school, architecture and urban planning school, and pharmacy school in the state of New York.

History

Initial years

UB was founded in May of 1846 as a private medical school to train the doctors for the communities of Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and surrounding villages. Dr. James Platt White was instrumental in obtaining a charter for the University of Buffalo from the state legislature in 1846. He also taught the first class of 89 men in obstetrics.

The doors first opened to students in 1847 and after associating with a hospital for teaching purposes, the first class of students graduated the medical school in July 1847. The first chancellor of the University was future President of the United States Millard Fillmore. Upon his ascension to the presidency after President Taylor's death, Fillmore stayed on as part-time chancellor. Fillmore's name now graces the evening and continuing education school Millard Fillmore College located on the South Campus as well as the Millard Fillmore Academic Center, an academic and administrative services building at the core of the residential Ellicott Complex, located on the North Campus.

I hope some student/graduate from SUNY Buffalo, will see this and explain thier opinions(likes and dislikes) about SUNY Buffalo. I visited the campus yesterday and loved the school. However, I wanted some second opinions from people other than the tour guide. Thanks~

I went to SUNY Albany, but a bunch of my friends went to SUNY Buffalo and I used to visit them regularly. Except for the horrible winter weather, they loved the school. When I visited, there was always something to do on campus and in the city, the cafeteria food was good, my friends like their professors, and most students were friendly and happy. I think you'll really like it there.
OK, so I'm a HS senior and long story short, im going through some dismal college rejections (bing and stony said no!). UB is one of the university's that accepted me so im probably going there. I live in Queens, NY so it's pretty far. I've already signed up for the Spring Discovery Day (for incoming freshmans) since I want to check out UB. Until then, I just want to ask any UB students (current or graduated) out there: What's UB like? I know it's sort of a general question, but any sort of insight will help me out, especially any important inside information I need to know! Also, I know you can get to UB with planes, trains and automobiles but whats the best way? Im thinking the plane since it A LOT faster and cost-wise it seems like a good deal (with JetBlue) but then again I haven't even traveled to UB yet..

I'm a freshman at UB, and at this time last year, I was wondering how I'd like UB, and if I was making the right decision, and the answer is.... Yes, I have made the right decision. I have had a great time my first year, and I am receiving a good education. Your question is very broad, but in general, UB is a huge place, it gets very cold and snowy in the winter, and the main campus is located in one of the safest places in the USA (Amherst, NY). I am from Albany, so i take the train home, but since you're from the city, take JetBlue, since it's so cheap and so fast. I know a barely answered you, but contact me with specific questions if you want some more info.
I'm a community college that is planning on majoring in business adminstration and I was wondering about SUNY Buffalo. Also, is University of Buffalo's business program accredited?

University of Buffalo is pretty good in business. My aunt is a professor there & she has a lot of good things to say about the university. The University of Buffalo is even expanding some of it's programs to Asia- they now teach Business in Singapore. So it is a good and "in-demand" degree, especially considering students overseas really want to graduate with a business degree from the University of Buffalo.

Just some background information: I'm currently going to a school (Buffalo State College) that I hate for many reasons. I'm going to be transferring to a local, community college (Erie CC) for Fall 2007 and Spring 2008. However, for Fall 2008, I plan on going to another college, preferably a SUNY school, for a major in English, with the possibility of a minor in Journalism. What are the top SUNY schools for English majors? I preferably don't want a huge school, but if that's what it takes, then I'll settle with it. If someone could give me some suggestions of SUNY schools with good English departments, that would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you could let me know your source for how you know the school has a good English department, that would be great. On a side note, English at Buffalo State College is a joke - ENG101 was easier than anything at my high school ever was. Just some more information about my grades and stuff: My GPA this past semester was a 3.3 (which equals out to the high 80s). My overall average in high school was a 92.5. Many of the reasons I do not like Buff State include the fact that the school is very poor with many poor people going there just to get their refund checks from the E.O.P. program. Also, the dorms are so ridiculous.

I would suggest SUNY Albany. Albany is a research school so a lot of the teachers are here because they are currently working on projects and must teach to receive funds. When is that bad? When you're talking about a computer science or biology department. When is that good? For English departments. Most of the professors are well acknowledged specialists in their fields, some recognized throughout the world. Also, there is a wide variety of classes to choose from with fewer restrictions, so you tend to find subjects you're interested in with teachers who really do know their stuff. My overall suggestion? Inquire into the honors program if you decide to attend. If you are accepted, you work one-on-one with a teacher, a supervisor and a second reader to produce a thesis. My topic is "The Parental Void in Emily Dickinson" and it has been a wonderful but challenging experience. I know you mentioned in your question that your other school is too easy, so this would be a way to challenge yourself. The down side? I'm from Buffalo also and I LOVE the people and sense of community. Albany is a bigger school and doesn't have that sense of community. But it is definitely worth the sacrifice to look into. Email some of the teachers in topics you're interested in, see if they'll give you some advice.

While not considered "selective" as far as admissions rankings are concerned, very few universities share its strength in medicine, engineering, and computer science. It offers many joing degrees and honors classes as well. Nearly have go on to graduate or professional school. Class size can be a problem as well as diversity. Only 9 percent are not from NY and many people are commuter students. Despite this, UBers enjoy a great social life. All in all, this can be a solid choice and its alumni network is far reaching.
