Marian University - Indianapolis

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Marian College is a co-educational, liberal arts college, located in Indianapolis, Indiana, on the northwest side of the city. It is owned and sponsored by the Sisters of St Francis of Oldenburg (Indiana), a Roman Catholic religious congregation. Enrollment is around 1,500 students, full and part-time.

History

Saint Francis Normal School was founded in Oldenburg, Indiana, in 1851 by the Sisters of St. Francis Oldenburg, as an all-female normal school, as two-year teacher training schools were then known. Saint Francis Normal School predated the first publicly-funded normal school in Indiana, the State Normal School, by nearly a decade. Saint Francis Normal School was named in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. The language of instruction was German.

In 1936 Saint Francis Normal School merged with Immaculate Conception Junior College, at which time the resulting institution was renamed Marian College, where Marian is the adjectival form of Mary, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. In 1937, the portion of Marian College in Oldenburg, Indiana, moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1954 Marian College first admitted men, coeducationally.

In October 2007, it was announced by President Dan Elsener that Marian College would become The Marian University. The change is effective July 1, 2009.

The motto of Marian College is on its seal: Sedes Sapientiae which is Latin for Seat of Wisdom, which refers to Mary in whose lap rested Jesus Christ, the Wisdom of God, a Roman Catholic belief.
