Dedicated to the mission of “Developing Leaders for Life,” St. Thomas University looks to instill the academic, professional and social skills necessary for each of our students to become exemplary leaders in their chosen field and in their community as a whole.
St. Thomas University is the home of Biscayne College; schools of Law; Science, Technology and Engineering Management; Business; Leadership Studies; Theology and Ministry; and a wide variety of extracurricular, spiritual and community-oriented programs, all designed to further our students’ goals and leadership abilities.
St. Thomas University is a major educational institution with approximately 2,500 students representing 28 states and 65 foreign countries. The University is a diverse community of learners working under Roman Catholic auspices with competence, objectivity, and respect for academic freedom. St. Thomas University offers quality undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies while placing an emphasis on lifelong value-oriented education. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Through academic programs grounded in the liberal arts, you will learn practical skills in the classroom- like how to think for yourself, solve problems analytically, write and speak effectively, and interact with people from a broad range of backgrounds and cultures. Throughout campus you will also feel a strong spiritual presence- even in the classroom. Because diversity extends to religious beliefs and because we are a Catholic institution, all students take classes in ethics, philosophy, and religion so they can develop an understanding and appreciation of all faiths.
Our Academic Enhancement Center will prepare you for academic work at the college level and assist you in developing basic skills in writing, reading, mathematics, and English as a Second Language (ESL). You will have access to free individualized counseling, tutoring, and placement-testing services. You can also participate in workshops on library usage, note-taking, and study strategies, and exam preparation.
Through their academic endeavors as well as their involvement with campus ministry, academic clubs, community service programs, social organizations, athletic teams and student government, St. Thomas University students are offered a wide variety of opportunities to develop an appreciation of their personal worth, individual gifts and academic potential. Faculty, administrators and staff provide a strong support network and serve as mentors and guides as students pursue personal and academic growth.
St. Thomas University is your place to be: your place to be interested, informed, involved and engaged. We have many kinds of organizations and activities to stimulate your heart and mind including athletic events, service & theme clubs, student government, a literary magazine, a campus TV station, the student newspaper, concerts, cookouts, exciting speakers, and worship services. All these outlets provide the opportunity for you to interact with members of the Bobcat community and participate in university life.
We expect your time at St. Thomas to be an exciting one, a time when you’ll be exposed to many different people, ideas, and cultures both within the university and in the surrounding environment. Situated between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, St. Thomas is well located for your exploration of South Florida and its rich diversity. We encourage you to partake in the cultural and ecological uniqueness of the area as you prepare yourself for a life of personal and professional leadership no matter where the road leads you after St. Thomas.

St. Thomas University is a private Roman Catholic university in the Miami suburb of Miami Gardens, Florida.
As a college, it was founded in 1961 as Biscayne College by the order of the Augustinian Friars. The college was accepted as a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and first accredited by the Commission on Colleges in 1968. Through continued growth and development, Biscayne College earned university status in 1984 after the addition of 10 Master degree programs and the opening of the School of Law. The University came under the sponsorship of the Archdiocese of Miami in 1988, conferring upon St. Thomas the distinction of being the only Catholic Archdiocesan sponsored university in the State of Florida.
When University status was attained the name of the institution was changed to St. Thomas University to reflect its Cuban heritage. The University traces its roots to the Universidad Católica de Santo Tomás de Villanueva, founded in 1946 in Havana, Cuba, named after Saint Thomas of Villanova, by American Augustinians with assistance from European Augustinians. When the Castro government expelled the Augustinians from Cuba in 1961, several of the American Augustinians came to Miami where they founded Biscayne College. Given their experience in Cuba, the University’s founders, and specifically its first president, who was vice rector of Villanueva, were intimately familiar with teaching students from different backgrounds.
The NFL team, the Miami Dolphins trained at St. Thomas University, from 1970 until 1993.
The St. Thomas University School of Law is one of only three accredited Catholic law schools south of Georgetown University’s School of Law in Washington, DC. The School of Law at St. Thomas was fully accredited by the American Bar Association in February 1995, and offers the Juris Doctor degree (J.D.) as well as the Masters of Law (LL.M).
