History

Weber State University was founded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the Weber Stake Academy in 1889; like Weber County and the Weber River, the school was named after John Henry Weber, an early fur trader.

The university first opened its doors for students on 7 January 1889 when ninety-eight students enrolled for classes. The first principal of Weber Stake Academy was Louis F. Moench. He served from 1889-1892 and again from 1894-1902. In the latter year Moench was succeeded as principal by David O. McKay who served in that position until 1908. From 1914-1917 James L. Barker was the principal of the Weber Stake Academy.

In the early 20th century, the school underwent multiple name changes: Weber Stake Academy from its founding in 1889 to 1897, Weber Academy in 1902, Weber Normal college in 1918, Weber College in 1922, Weber College 1933 when the LDS Church transferred the institution to the State of Utah. In 1951 the college moved from its downtown location in Ogden to a spacious and scenic area in the southeast bench area of the city. The school became Weber State College in 1962 and on January 1, 1991, finally gained university status, obtaining its current name.

Question: Weber State University...?

Anyone go to Weber State University in Utah? What can you tell me about the social life there and University Village housing? Thanks!

Best Answer

I actually work up there. Weird huh?! Anyway, social life is pretty tame I think. If you're looking for a party school WSU probably isn't it but we have student workers in our office and they stay pretty busy. One of my nieces transferred there because she was looking for a school where students were a bit more serious about their education and weren't partying all the time. However, those that want a party can find one. I certainly didn't have any trouble finding one when I was young and wild. I imagine you can guess that Mormons are the predominate religion but Ogden also has a high percentage of Catholics and there are several small Baptist churches around. I think that generally people are accepting of others regardless of race, religion, etc. There are buttheads but then you find those everywhere you go. Univ Village is really pretty nice. It's not very old so its in good shape. It's a few blocks from campus but there are shuttle busses and city busses. I don't have any idea how much it is cause I don't really work with it but I'm sure I could find out. If you go to this site http://departments.weber.edu/ce/conferences/ISTE2009/UVFloorPlan.asp you'll see a floor plan and if you click on the purple dots it'll show a pic of the actual apartment. Most of the students I know actually live in other apartments in the area. Feel free to email me if you have other questions. I've lived here my whole life and I really love it here. The mountains are just awesome and beautiful! Southern Utah is amazing too. Vegas is only about 7 hrs away so it's fun for a weekend trip. Salt Lake has a lot of great concerts and things like that and it's only about 30min to an hour away depending on where you're going. It's a relatively safe place to live which is nice too. Bad things happen, they do everywhere but it's a lot safer than a lot of places are these days. http://www.ogdencvb.org/index.php

Question: I go to Weber State University in Utah..when is the best time to sell books back to the book store?

Like, when will they buy them back for the most money?

Best Answer

I always found that selling books right at the beginning or end of the semester helps. You may also try checking the classes that you bought them for and offering to sell your last semester's books for less than the bookstore is charging to the new students. Many times the only changes in the newest editions are just a few words and different page numbers. Good Luck.

Question: Have you heard of Weber State University?

I have heard of it in fact i went to Weber State. It is located in Ogden Utah. It is a great school they have smaller class sizes. The professors are there and are willing to spend the time and help you out. Some of the programs are the best in the state. Need any information feel free to contact me.

This appears to vary by degree and program. For example, the program BS in Chemistry with Teaching certificate requires 120 credits hours, while an Associate of Applied Science as a Chemical Technician requires 63. To determine specific requirements, go to WSU's catalog index at http://documents.weber.edu/catalog/current/pdf%20files/~391-396-PROGRAMS.pdf which will give you the page number for each program. Then link to that page of the catalog from this page: http://documents.weber.edu/catalog/current/pdflinks.htm and scroll through until you see the program that interests you. For more information you might contact the University's Recruitment office: Student Recruitment and Orientation 1103 University Circle Ogden, Utah 84408-1103 (801) 626-6050 recruit1@weber.edu Best of luck!
