Malcolm X College is a two-year college of the City Colleges of Chicago located on the west side of Chicago, Illinois, USA, at 1900 W Van Buren St. It was founded as Crane Junior College in 1911 to serve graduates of the nearby Crane High School, and was the first of the City Colleges to be founded; it was renamed in honor of civil rights advocate and orator Malcolm X in 1969.
Malcolm X College is located in Chicago, Illinois at 1900 West Van Buren St. Malcolm X College has been around since 1911. During this time period Herzl Junior College was the first city college in the Chicago City. The name Herzl wouldn’t last long as the college was re named to Crain Junior College. Crain Junior College first opened up its doors to 28 adults who where seeking a higher education. During the depression years it was hard to keep Crain Junior College open. Its existence was threatened by a financially strapped board of education. A big time Chicago lawyer Clarence Darrow argued that the college had to stay open because it was a form of higher education. He stated that the city colleges where there for the people. Clarence won the battle and Crain Junior College stayed open. A Legislative act in the late 1960’s the city’s junior college name would have to be changed to a comprehensive community college. At the communities request in 1968 Crain Junior College was changed to Malcolm X College. Malcolm X College core values follow those of whom the college is named after. These values are Accountability, Communication, Community, Diversity, Integrity, Learning, Quality, Respect, and Service. They also have 8 goals, which pretty much mimic there core values. There are 2 locations for Malcolm X College. The main campus is located at 1900 West Van Buren St Chicago, Illinois. The second one is called West Side Learning Center. This it’s located at 4624 W. Madison Chicago, Illinois.
Malcolm X College is an open admissions college. What this means is that anybody is welcome to attend here. Students that choose to attend here must take district assessment and placement tests. They only way you can avoid taking this is if you are a transfer student or you choose to use your recent ACT scores. You are also admitted if you graduate from an accredited high school, you have you GED, and a transfer student from another college. If you are a new student enrolled in Malcolm X College they have a “New Student Service Center.” This service will provide support to students who are either transfer students, adults with GED’s, or students who are just looking to continue their education. The student service center was created on the Malcolm X mission of supporting a learning and assessment-centered community college.
