SCAD, Atlanta, downtown, evening Atlanta is a fast-paced, modern city with a mild climate and is an exciting place to live with great cultural attractions, several professional sports teams, and more than 100 art galleries. Considered a hub for government, commerce, education, and culture, it’s named among “America’s 50 Hottest Cities for Business Expansion & Relocation” by Expansion Management magazine.
The Atlanta College of Art (ACA), established in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1905, was the first non-profit college of visual art in the Southeastern United States.
As an original and founding member of Atlanta's Woodruff Arts Center, the Atlanta College of Art was adjoined with the High Museum of Art, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Alliance Theatre. The college was located in Midtown Atlanta on Peachtree Street, a business district and home of the arts and culture in metropolitan Atlanta.
The college offered studies in the mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking, photograghy, sculpture, digital art, video and graphic design. The school also offered programming to the greater Atlanta community through the Georgia Artists Registry, ACA Gallery shows, community education classes for adults, and summer programs in the arts for children and teens.
In August 2005, the boards of trustees of the Woodruff Arts Center and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) formally approved the merger of ACA and SCAD. In June 2006, the two institutions combined operations at SCAD's Atlanta location. Although the merger was initially and widely contested by many ACA students, faculty and members of the Atlanta arts community, the advent of a single institution of art and design, ultimately, broadened and strengthened the faculty, curricular offerings, and physical and human resources, resulting in the formation of one of the premier colleges of art and design in the United States.
Notable alumni of the Atlanta College of Art include Radcliffe Bailey, Roe Ethridge, Kara Walker, and Ty Pennington.

College Advice on SCAD - Atlanta |
Question: Which School Is Better: The Art Institute of Atlanta or SCAD?I have just been notified that I have been accepted to both SCAD and the Art Institute of Atlanta. Now, I'm not sure which school to choose. They both seem good, but I can only choose one. So, can you please tell me which school would benefit me more in my career choice: filmmaking, and specifically why? Thank you advance.8 months ago
Best AnswerI'm a recent grad of SCAD's main campus in Savannah. I got my degree in Visual Effects but I worked alot with the film department. I can say that, at least in Savannah, its a great school and campus. You'll be able to use equipment that you see professionals use. The professors are well connected, many have worked in Hollywood and everywhere else. And since you're a film person, the annual SCAD Film Festival attracts high profile names and films, and since you'd be a student wont have to pay the 100 bucks, or however much it costs, to attend. It's a great place to network and produce work that rivals what you see in movies and television now. Good luck. |
Question: Tell Me about Scad atlanta Please!!!!?How are the dorms and community and people and environment at scad atlanta and whats the demographics of the students like how many minorities attend Scad atlanta and the what opportunities are given to the students, and do they have a dance major? any info would be greatly appreciated THANK YOU!!!!9 months ago
Best AnswerHi! I AM a student at SCAD-Atlanta, and I absolutely love it! I’ve been here since transferring from a different college in 2007. SCAD-Atlanta has been open since 2005, and we now have 1,500 students. We are an extremely diverse college and have students from all 50 states, and over 100 countries. One thing that I love about SCAD-Atlanta is that we have one main campus that the majority of the majors are at. You get to interact with your fellow students, and everyone’s face becomes familiar. It’s a great way to network with different majors, and make a ton of friends. SCAD offers a lot of opportunities to their students. It’s really easy to transfer back and forth from the Atlanta campus to the Savannah campus. We also have E-Learning available, and a location in Lacoste, France. They are also about to open a campus in Hong Kong in fall of 2010. Also, SCAD has an affiliation with the Woodruff Arts Center. As a SCAD student you get free access to Atlanta’s High Museum. It’s really awesome because you get to see what you’re learning about in your art history classes. SCAD-Atlanta also owns five galleries that you can see for free: Trois Gallery, ACA Gallery, ShopSCAD, Gallery 1600 and Gallery See. SCAD offers a total of 42 different majors and 52 minors. At SCAD-Atlanta we have 23 majors and 18 minors offered. We currently do not have a dance major specifically; however, we do have performing arts major which is offered in Savannah. As far as living on campus at SCAD-Atlanta, we have two different dorms – Spring House, and ACA Dorms. The Spring House dorms are typically for freshman, but some decide to stay past their freshman year. Spring House used to be a hotel, and was renovated and transformed into SCAD’s dorms. There’s a pool, mac and pc labs, a few pieces of exercise equipment (there’s a full gym on campus), and a lounge area with TV’s, couches, ping pong tables and pool tables. The rooms are set up for two students to share one room, and one bathroom. The room comes with two twin beds and two drafting tables. The rooms also have wireless internet which is free. ACA Dorms are located on top of the ACA Sculpture building (which is right next to the High Museum). These dorms are for upper classmen only; so sophomores and up. The layout for the ACA Dorms is apartment style. You share a dorm with another student but you each have your own room, and bathroom (so two bedrooms and two bathrooms per dorm). There’s also a living area in the dorm as well as a kitchenette. Check this link out: http://scad.edu/atlanta/life/index.cfm You should definitely take a tour of the building, it’s an awesome facility and the school is excellent. The professors are all super nice and really want to train you for the real world. Everything at SCAD is state of the art and industry standard so once you graduate you are ready to go out into the workplace. I highly recommend it!! Hopefully I answered a lot of your questions but if you have anymore definitely email them at: asapatl@scad.edu |
Question: I need to know everything about SCAD Atlanta.?Which campus is better, Atlanta or Savannah. I would love to attend the Atlanta campus because i've heard that Savannah is boring. To my understanding this is a very good Art School and I want to major in Advetising Design. Please advise me on anything about both campuses.25 months ago
Best AnswerHere's some links you might find helpful: http://www.scad.edu/advertising-design/ http://www.scad.edu/atlanta/ http://www.scad.edu/atlanta/life/overview.cfm http://www.scad.edu/about/life/index.cfm Either campus would be a wonderful place to attend school...Atlanta is going to have a bigger city feel while Savannah will have more scenic appeal. Both cities have plenty to do...so don't judge Savannah on size and the gossip you've heard alone. Personally I love Savannah...its beautiful and there's always something fun going on. |
Question: What Neighborhoods are around SCAD-Atlanta?I'm moving to Atlanta to go to SCAD, are there any good neighbourhoods for college students?26 months ago
Best AnswerSCAD in Atlanta is relatively close to Georgia Tech, so I would start with places on the north side of the Tech Campus (say 14th Street) if you're looking for student-type housing. The rest of the neighborhoods near there are very pricey. |
Question: What is the best area in Atlanta to live in near SCAD?I am contemplating going to the Savannah College of Art & Design in Atlanta, but need to know what would be the best place to live around the area. It will be myself, my husband, and son. He's a newborn so he won't be in school for a while so that's not an issue for now. Your answers are greatly appreciated.34 months ago
Best AnswerAtlantic station is very nice as the person above suggested. That is an bad area that the city is renovating, so there is still some crime in Atlantic Station and the surrounding area. Midtown is really great. It is very safe and the center of everything. It is pricey, but you do some research you can find some very affordable options in the Midtown area. Here is a couple links to check out for renting options: www.rentinmidtown.com www.promove.com |
Question: Is the art institute of atlanta considered a community college?I am getting ready to start at AIA, I need to know if its considered a community college, because later this year I want to apply for membership of the sorority alpha kappa alpha, They dont except applicants from community colleges. Thanx I will be attending for 4 years for my bachelor in Graphic design37 months ago
Best AnswerThough the Art Institute is not considered a community college - not public, etc. - since it is not a 4 yr program it will still probably not qualify you for the sorority. |
