University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (U of M, U-M, UM, UMich, or simply Michigan) is a public research university located in the state of Michigan. It is the state's oldest university and the flagship campus of the University of Michigan, which also includes two regional campuses in Flint and Dearborn.

The university was founded in 1817 in Detroit as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, about 20 years before the Michigan Territory officially became a state. The university moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 onto 40 acres (16 ha) of what is now known as Central Campus. Since its establishment in Ann Arbor, the university has physically expanded to include more than 500 major buildings with a combined area of more than 29 million square feet (664 acres or 2.69 km²), and transformed its academic program from a strictly classical curriculum to one that includes science and research. During the 20th century and early 2000s, UM was the site of much student activism and was a focal point in the controversy over affirmative action within higher education admissions.

Today, the university is a major research institution and is considered one of the original eight Public Ivies. In the most recent edition of World University Rankings, the university was ranked the 18th best university worldwide. Having graduated the largest number of living alumni at 460,000, the university is alma mater to the late U.S. President Gerald Ford and a number of heads of states around the world. UM owns the renowned University of Michigan Health System and has one of the largest research expenditures of any American university. Its athletic teams, called the Wolverines, are members of the Big Ten Conference and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The athletic program is known for its success in ice hockey and football, the latter of which plays in Michigan Stadium, the largest college football-only stadium in the world.

Question: Getting into University of Michigan...?

I am wondering what would I need to get into University of Michigan? I currently have about a 3.97, and have taken a number of accelerated courses, and will take 1 AP course next year, which will be my junior year. I currently have a job, and will probably work part time until I go to college. However, my SAT scores aren't very high. I haven't taken the SAT yet but after having done tons of practice I'm still not looking at anything much higher than 2000-2050 on practice tests (I might be able to go up a little more but I'm definatly not going to exceed 2100, and I'm doubtful I'll get above a 600 in reading). I also haven't yet done any community service, though I probably will in the near future. I have a few special skills (Though I don't know how well they'll be considered), and suppose I wrote an essay on par with the average student who gets into U of M. Also, I live in Ann Arbor, so I get preference over people from pretty much anywhere else. And also, my dad went to U of M. Okay, the question is, is that SAT score going to be good enough, and how well will I really have to do in the future, especially in my AP classes to get in? I am taking 1 AP class (Chemistry) Junior year, and will probably take 2 or 3 senior year. Since I haven't taken AP classes before I am thinking it might bring my GPA down a little, so I wouldn't expect my GPA to stay that high. I really don't want it to be risky, meaning a situation where I might get in or not, I want it to be certin. Anyway that it's possible? Any advice? Thanks.

You are definitely in. Trust me. You live in Ann Arbor. You have high GPA. In addition, your job would help too; it fulfills the extra-curricular requirement. I have known people with much less impressive qualifications getting in.

Question: which college is better from people majoring in medicine?

UConn University of Michigan UNC - Wilmington Coastal Carolina University UNC Grand Valley State University or East Carolina University Miller-Motte Technical University
36 months ago

Best Answer

Most of those schools don't have medical schools -- so would be impossible places to "major in medicine." Medical school is a graduate program -- and people don't usually talk about majoring in it. If you are actually interested in a pre-med program, then I would suggest Michigan, UNC-Chapel Hill and UConn (in that order). The other schools aren't particularly good universities -- and if you want to go to medical school, it is a good idea to go to the best school possible.

Question: Which school is better for medicine Wayne State University or University of Michigan Ann arbor?

I'm having a hard time deciding on which school i can accomplish the most at which one will i get a job the fastest and which one is the best school for medcine. I'm planing on getting my phd. They are both good school but i need help on deciding which is better. I'm going into nueroscience.

Question: About admission to U of M Ann Arbor?

How many essays do you write for admission to University of Michigan -Ann Arbor? Types of questions????

Best Answer

The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor requires applicants to answer "Two short answer essay questions (250 words or less) and one extended essay question (500 words or less) will be required as part of the application process. Each answer should be written on a separate sheet of paper clearly labeled with the student's name, social security number, the school or college to which the student is applying, and the text of the question to which the student is answering." Unfortunately, because they are completing stuff for next year's incoming class and preparing application materials for the following year, the essay questions are not currently available online. And according to the Princeton Review, the university weights these as "IMPORTANT" to admission.

Question: Do I have a shot at getting into grad school at the University of Michigan? Any U of M MSW students?

I want to got to the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor for my MSW (masters degree in social work). The U of M is a very competitive school and the S.W program has been #1 in the country for the past 10 years. Am I competitve enough? ~After summer semester I will have a bachelors degree in psychology. ~I have a 3.5 g.p.a ~ I did a 3 month internship at the Red Cross. ~I am President of the Social Work Club at my university. ~I have excellent recommendation letters. I don't have any other volunteer or internship experience but we have had fundraisers and charity events in the social work club. Am I competitive enough? What can I do to increase my odds of acceptance?

Best Answer

I think you are pretty competitive and would have a good a chance. You're involved in a lot of activities and have a good GPA. So you will have a shot. But if you want to be really really really competitive to get accepted, I suggest raising your GPA to a 3.6 or being more involved with volunteer activities such as volunteering in a hospital or retirement center. Colleges love to see someone volunteering. Especially if you're into social work, volunteering is a plus. Good Luck! I'm trying to get accepted to a college too!

Question: HOw will college life be like for me at the University of Michigan?

Ann Arbor's lovely like a quaint university city. Bustling with students and nice cafes. Must remember Zingermann. There's nothing much in the capital city of Lansing and Detroit's equiv to "de toilet". So you're probably in the best spot in Michigan. Good for jogging around. Congrats, by the way! Oh, and pack up thick bundles of woolies..

Question: University of Michigan & Boston College?

If you are admitted into U of Michigan Ann Arbor and Boston College, which one will you choose? By comparing these two schools, can you list out the advantages and disadvantages of attending either school? I hear that Detroit has a pretty high crime rate, is it true? Is it hard to find internships or safe jobs there? in this case, is BC better? THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Michigan is not an ivy but it is a very hard school to get into out of state. If you are an out-of-stater, you will most likely be on the higher end, in terms of intelligence level. Also, Mich is not in Detroit, it's in Ann Arbor, so I wouldn't be too worried about Detroit. Michigan has great sports and its a big public schools. If you want a big place, the academics there are great. Boston College is a smaller private school. It's fairly close to Boston, allowing for easy access to go into the city. Also, Boston is America's College Town so you have the possibility of meeting many other students your age. BC is a Jesuit school. If you are catholic, that might be a great match for you. If you are interested in Greek Life though, it doesn't exist at BC. BC has a reputation for being a party school so the Michigan name might be a little better but it all depends. They are both really great schools.

Question: University of Michigan-Ann Arbor/ Washington-Seattle/ California-Davis?

I am an international student majoring in psychology. Which university will be the best for me and why? Thanks! :)

Best Answer

Michigan is really the best choice. I live near Davis and unless you like looking at cows and agriculture- dont go there. The choice is really up to you. Look at what each school has to offer as far as student activities and stuff. Look at the housing situation, the food, facilities available, and the type of people that go there.

Question: Do you think University of MI, Clark University or Purdue will take a 27 on the ACT?

Will I have a good chance to get into these schools with 27 composite score on the ACT?

Best Answer

U of Michigan (Ann Arbor) ACT scores over 24 94% ACT scores over 30 38% http://education.yahoo.com/college/facts/9263.html Clark U (Worcester, MA?) ACT scores over 24 76% ACT scores over 30 9% http://education.yahoo.com/college/facts/5751.html Purdue U ACT scores over 24 65% ACT scores over 30 15% http://education.yahoo.com/college/facts/8218.html I'd say you're in good shape. Make sure that your grades are good, you have one or two meaningful extracurriculars (not resume padding), and you write a good essay. Give a good interview and express interest by writing follow-up letters and frequent inquiries on the status of your applications. Good luck.

Question: How will college life be like for me as an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan?

I am a transfer student who received an invitation to play halfback this fall, I also am majoring in biomedical engineering and I plan to get a 3.8 at the University of Michigan. How will college life be like for me in terms of social life, partying, academics and girls?

Best Answer

I live a few miles from the campus, and every night some party is getting busted for something, social life is pretty good they have tons of frats and sororities and clubs and our football team is pretty good, Academics depending where you come from probably will be harder, Michigan may be a party school but its academics are not easy in the littlest bit, as for girls if they are from here they probably are a bunch of little $luts, out of state they are just really weird.

Question: For students at the university of michigan-ann arbor?

does the essay mean a lot in terms of u getting in, i am a soph in highschool 3.3 gpa, a few extracuriculars and i might be joining a comunity service program. never been in trouble and it is my dream to go to the u-m. if i bring up my gPA to around a 3.4-3.5 and stress how much i want to go there on my essay, will i get it or do i have a chance? also what act and sat scores should i aim for

I personally do not believe the essay has very much impact on the admittance of the student, just from personal experience, because I just applied to UofM this fall. I received a 11 out of 12 on the ACT writing section and had my essays proofread by a handful of AP teachers at my school. I also plan on majoring in English; so to say the least, I wrote 3 darn good essays (Michigan requires 2 short essays and one long btw). I received a 26 the first time I took my ACT, then retook it and got a 28. I have a 3.8 GPA and I took mostly all AP courses. I have been a Varsity Cheerleader for 3 years and a captain for one year, as well as belonging to groups like class council, National Honor society, etc. I also had over 2,000 hours of community service over 4 years. All that, and I got deferred. Deferred. To be honest, with a 3.3, even a 3.5 I don't think you will get in. Unless you have athletics pulling for you, or you of a completely different racial background--- which may not even apply for you next year--- you will be at a long shot. It will help if either one of your parents went to UofM, but still. A 3.5 is mediocre, when most students are coming in with 3.8+. You can get in with a 28, some of my friends did this year. So I say thats a good target. The best option for you though is to have backups. The kids that got admitted to UofM were either super outstanding students, star athletes, or class leaders. Unless you are close to that at all, your chances are slim. Sorry

It great! Everything you need is within walking distance (well almost everything) GREAT restaurants, great bars, friendly people. It can get expensive though. So make sure Mom and Dad are up to chipping in on some of your expense. I live in MI and I love going to Ann Arbor. There is so much music and Cultural influences. It just might be the most socially significant area of Michigan.

Question: which is a better college university of michigan or notre dame university?

I want to become a doctor....

Best Answer

Definitely University of Michigan. Since Michigan has a hospital and proximity to Pfizer, your opportunities in Ann Arbor will far exceed Notre Dame. My brother was pre-med at Michigan and was able to work for the university doing medical research. Plus, there isn't much in South Bend, and Ann Arbor is a great place to spend your college years. =) Good Luck!
