The mission statement for TALMUDICAL INSTITUTE OF UPSTATE NEW YORK is too lengthy to be included here. Please contact the school for information regarding our mission statement. ( This response was approved by the IPEDS staff )
The Talmudical Institute of Upstate New York (TIUNY) is an all male educational institution for high school and college age young men located in Rochester, New York and is primarily an American, Lithuanian style Haredi but non-Hasidic yeshiva. TIUNY was founded in 1974 as the first external affiliate of the Chofetz Chaim education network by Rabbi Menachem Davidowitz and Rabbi Dovid Harris.
In 2004, TIUNY opened its own day school, Derech HaTorah of Rochester, grades kindergrten through 8th, with two graduating classes so far. The school is thriving as new families continue to move to Rochester.
Among TIUNY's notable alumni is Yaakov Shwekey, a popular Jewish singer. Rabbi Ben-Tzion Shafier, founder of the shmuz.com and a noted speaker in the orthodox world attended TIUNY and also taught at TIUNY for many years.
