School Description
Provided by Burlington CollegeBurlington College values the innate dignity of every human being. Our mission is to create a community of individuals who direct their own education and become passionate lifelong learners.
BURLINGTON COLLEGE is an independent, progressive, liberal arts college located in Burlington, Vermont, offering two-year Associate and four-year Bachelor of Arts degrees, as well as several professional certificate programs.
Our founders’ intention was to create an undergraduate institution firmly rooted in concern for, and interaction with, the greater Burlington community. The College continues to offer rich and diverse opportunities for its students to participate in arts related events, the natural environment, and civic and humanitarian projects.
Creative adaptation of strong liberal arts curricula in Humanities, Fine Arts and the Social Sciences has led to the focused development of majors in Transpersonal Psychology, Cinema Studies and Film Production, and Legal and Justice Studies. Students carry out service to the community as an integral component of their education at Burlington College and a new Institute for Civic Engagement was inaugurated this year to better enable the College to research, educate, publish, and take action on issues of importance to Vermont and the wider world community.
Coursework and degree goals can be tailored to meet an individual’s interests and needs. It is important to consider the responsibilities inherent in this academic freedom. Inner motivation, intellectual curiosity, the ability to follow through and take ownership of one’s education is essential to the success of a student here. Enjoying learning for learning’s sake is a common quality among our students.
Burlington College is located in Burlington, Vermont, a city rated one of the ‘most livable cities’ in the United States and rich in cultural and professional resources. Panoramic views of Lake Champlain to the west and the south provide magnificent open vistas from the modest campus.
Most of the classrooms are housed in a turn-of-the-century building on the edge of the Old North End, a neighborhood rich in history and growing diversity. A pedestrian lane connects the College to the downtown waterfront community and the bike-path that stretches along the shores of Lake Champlain and up through the islands. A community sailing center, boathouse, marina and boardwalk can also be found here.
Burlington’s downtown, filled with sidewalk cafés, restaurants, clubs, galleries and shops, is the place to meet up with friends. Mardi-Gras, the Discover Jazz Festival, First Night, the Winter Festival, the South End Art Hop, and the Ramble in the Old North End are only a few of the events offered during a year-round arts scene unrivaled anywhere! For folks interested in big-city life, Montreal is only an hour and a half away, Boston four hours, and New York, less than six hours.
