Lyndon State College is a public college located at Lyndonville in the U.S. state of Vermont. The town is located in Caledonia county in a region of Vermont known as the Northeast Kingdom. In addition to a range of Bachelor's Degree programs, the college offers a Master's Degree program in Education.
The college was founded in 1911 as the Lyndon Normal School, and occupied the mansion built in 1883 by Theodore Newton Vail, the first president of AT&T. The term "normal school" is based on the French école normale supérieure, a school to educate teachers. The College's first president was Rita L. Bole who has two buildings named for her on the campus. In 1947, the Normal School became Lyndon State Teachers College. In 1962, it was renamed Lyndon State College becoming a part of the Vermont State Colleges, a consortium of Vermont's five public colleges governed by a common board of trustees, chancellor and Council of Presidents. Since the college's founding, the original Vail Manor was insensibly torn down and the T.N. Vail Building currently sits where the manor once stood.
Vail Hall is the home of many classrooms, as well as teachers offices, especially English, meteorology, mathematics, and education. It is also the home of the mail room for all students on the first floor, and the bookstore, student center, and snack bar on the second floor. The science wing contains classrooms and laboratories for science classes, and there is also a television wing for the television studies major. It is also home of the Alexander Twlight Theater, a small intimate theater used for performances for the campus and community as well. It is connected to the Library and Academic Center, more formally known as LAC, which contains classrooms, a 24 hour computer lab, and the three-floor library. Harvey Academic Center, formally known as HAC, is a small building located at the center of campus, and houses offices and classrooms for the Recreation major, as well as for other classes.
