History
Early history
On the evening of July 23, 1954, a group of citizens meets in the Horry County Memorial Library to discuss a daring proposal - the creation of a local college. The group soon becomes a non-profit organization, the Coastal Educational Foundation, Inc. Coastal Carolina Junior College opens September 20, 1954, as a branch of the College of Charleston. Fifty-three students are enrolled, taught by a handful of part-time faculty, with classes meeting after hours in Conway High School.
In 1958, Coastal Carolina Junior College becomes independent when College of Charleston discontinues its extension program. Horry County voters approve a referendum which raises taxes by three mills to provide funding for the college. The South Carolina General Assembly creates the Horry County Higher Education Commission, a government regulatory agency to oversee use of Coastal Carolina's county tax money. The Horry County Higher Education Commission is responsible for a contract that establishes Coastal Carolina Regional Campus of the University of South Carolina, effective fall 1960.

Question: Whats the culture like around coastal carolina university?Nice southern people? Decent place?13 months ago
Best AnswerThe campus is about 50% commuter and 50% resident. It wasn't long ago that CCU was a commuter campus of the U of SC. Average age of students is traditional (18-21) though there are adult students and graduate students on campus. The campus sits between Conway and Myrtle Beach. Conway is the commuter town for the tourist industry in Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach is primarily a tourist economy. A key point is that school is in session when tourist season is over. That means that Myrtle Beach is nearly dead while school is in and jobs can be a challenge to find. Those jobs that do continue to exist tend to be in retail, hospitality, and food service. Some of the lowest paying occupational groups. There is no industry to speak of in the community. Myrtle Beach isn't populated by "southern people" as you'd find in the rest of South Carolina. For the most part, people in Myrtle Beach aren't from Myrtle Beach. This means you won't often get the "y'all ain't from 'round here are ya" since hardly anyone is from around here. There's a very large retired population in the area. The campus all but dies on weekends but there is plenty to do in and around Myrtle Beach in your off time. Of course, there's the beach. The club scene stays functioning in off season as well. Public transportation is all but non-existent, you'll need a car. I've been to a lot of schools. My take on the experience at CCU: There's a larger proportion of "high school brained" young adults than any other school I attended. Their parents haven't let them grow up and expect to be daily involved. This annoys many professors. There's also a very non-judgmental attitude among most students - for the most part, everyone is free to be who they want, no matter how 'off the wall'. The college has a reputation for being very gay/lesbian friendly. The overall attitude is very laid-back. It's not entirely a party-school but there's a party somewhere all the time. If you'd be shocked by classmates coming to class in a bikini (seasonal) or pajamas (anytime) then this might not be the place. Academic standards are reasonably high but not extreme at either end. You can fail out and you can graduate with a 3.8; only a couple per year will graduate with a 4.0 and about 1/3 fail out each year. Marine Science is the premiere major. Almost everyone else is either preparing to become a school teacher of some sort or only in college because the parents said they had to be. |
Question: How reputuable is the mathematics program at Coastal Carolina University?I am an honors math student looking to transfer to a 4yr school near Myrtle Beach. I would love your opinion of this school21 months ago
Best AnswerIt's an OK school and an OK program. Class sizes aren't large compared to a lot of state universities and the department considers teaching to be their main purpose, so professors are encouraged to be accessible to students. That said, there are much better math departments out there. For instance, Duke, UNC, and NC State three hours away have good math programs, with different strengths at each school. |
Question: Can anyone tell me about Coastal Carolina University?I'm planning on attending Coastal at the start of the 2008-09 school year. I wanted to know if it's a good school? What there is to do around the area? You know, just basic stuff a 18 (19 when I move in) year old guy would wanna know about the college, area, etc.23 months ago
Best AnswerI liked it fine - came to Myrtle Beach to go to college, graduated, and never left. Coastal Carolina is a medium sized (8,000), suburban (Conway/Myrtle Beach), state (public) college in the tier 4. It used to be a commuter school and still has some of that feel. It's not any different than any other medium sized - tier 3/4 school out there. "What there is to do..." the beach dude! It's Myrtle Beach. All of the things that tourists travel to Myrtle Beach for are here for the college student too. There's a pretty decent club scene and more than a little to see and do. In the off-season (which is when you go to school), jobs can be a touch hard to come by - this isn't the place to go if you have to earn a real living while you're in school. Plenty of waiter and retail jobs though. That said, it's not NYC or Boston or DC -- there isn't as much "culture" to find and not nearly as many people. Academics are good - I've not met anyone that wasn't able to go to grad school if they wanted after graduation. I met a lot of people over the years who failed out though - mostly because they came in thinking it'd be easy and were wrong. Many because they let the beach and scene keep them out of class. |
Question: Should I go to Arizona State University or Coastal Carolina University?I live in foxboro, massachusetts and have always wanted to go to asu and recently coastal carolina. Arizona State is the number 25 business school in the country, stanford is number 12 and sunny 340 days a year with the hottest girls and best parties in the country. Coastal is closer to home and in myrtle beach both are good schools for me.23 months ago
Best AnswerI'm a Coastal Carolina grad and I love my alma mater. I'm also "not from 'round here" and can tell you honestly that the general SC culture hasn't permeated Myrtle Beach. Fact is, not many here are from here and many don't even speak Southern. That said, you're looking at #12, #25, and a tier 4 college. You should attend the best college you can get into and afford that will help you most with your future. If you find that is CCU then "welcome to Myrtle Beach" -- I'm thinking you'll need some really good reasons to make CCU that choice. Note: While the physical mailing address of CCU is Conway SC -- it's actually located between Conway and Myrtle Beach. 7 miles from the surf - on the main road in, is "at the beach" ? |
