The University of Rhode Island, commonly abbreviated as URI, is the principal public research university in the State of Rhode Island, with its main campus in Kingston, Rhode Island, and three other campuses located throughout the state. URI has 14,546 undergraduates and 4,549 graduate students. It is a land grant, sea grant, and urban grant institution.
The University was first chartered as the state's agricultural school in 1888 by Joseph Santilli. The site of the school was originally the Oliver Watson Farm, and the original farmhouse still lies on the campus today. In 1892, the school became the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The first class comprised only seventeen students, and they graduated two years later. In 1909, the school's name was again changed to Rhode Island State College and the school's programs expanded beyond its original mandate. In 1951, the college became the University of Rhode Island by an act of the General Assembly. The Board of Governors for Higher Education, appointed by the governor, became the governing body of the University in 1981.
The University of Rhode Island Department of Athletics and Recreation offers 22 intercollegiate sports (12 women and 10 for men) and 17 club sports programs. The university is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association, and the Colonial Athletic Association in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision for football. The wide range of athletic facilities include the Ryan Center, Keaney Gymnasium, Meade Stadium, Mackal Field House, Tootell Aquatic Center, Boss Ice Arena, URI Soccer Complex, Beck Field and URI Softball Field. Other facilities available for students include fitness rooms, indoor track, swimming and diving pools, twelve tennis courts, and two beach volleyball courts, among others.
The team colors are light blue (formerly officially referred to as "Keaney blue"), white and navy blue. The school's mascot is a ram. It was chosen in 1923 as tribute to the school's agricultural history. There has not been a live ram at the school since 1974, with "Rhody", a student in an anthropomorphic ram costume, roaming the sidelines in his place.

Question:
University of Rhode Island?
I'd like to know anyone's opinion on Rhode Island's engineering program. Is it a respectable school?? I've visited the school and was very impressed with the atmosphere.

It's certainly not ranked in the top tier, but it IS an ABET-accredited school, which is very important.
Engineers in in-demand fields will always be able to find work. Go where you feel most comfortable. URI is certainly a respectable school. I know a guy who graduated about 10 years ago and has a very good job, although not in engineering.
You should ask what percentage of students graduating pass the engineering exam upon graduation, on the first try. (The national average is about 50%.)
Checking out the school's Web site, it looks like they have a very interesting coop option that places Juniors and Seniors in work situations.

any info or imput anyone has on any of these schools would be great. are they strong academic schools? will a pretty strong academic and activity record are u able to get in? how are the areas they are located? dorms? food?

I think UConn and VATech would be regarded as the most respected, with UTenn also respected. Furman and Belmont, not so much,
UConn is in a small town about 25 miles from Hartford. Most of the students are from CT so they would tend to be liberal Yankees. The town doesnt consist of much, but you are about 2 hours from NYC and Boston, so when you want to get out to a big rock show or night on the town, it is pretty easy. UConn has a reputation for very solid academics - the CT high schools are among the best in the nation, so the students there would be competitive.
VaTech is in Blacksburg, which is not exactly an entertainment mecca. And it is pretty far from Blacksburg to any center of civilization. That part of VA is quite pretty and rural, so if you like the rural south and feel comfortable with a more conservative, southern crowd, then that would be better for you. The last time I was there they were all excited about having a concert by a big Country Western musician.
At least you have some choices that are pretty different from each other - so you have a real decision to make, not just choosing between five schools that are all basically the same.

keep in mind that it has been 20 years since I graduated :)
College is probably going to be one of the most wonderful experiences of your life. I believe the exposure to the world, having to make decisions for yourself and meeting a variety of people are almost as important as the education you will obtain.
If you are in a situation that does not require you to work, I would suggest not doing so, at least during your freshman year. You will need some time to get adjusted.
Make sure to take advantage of as many opportunites to be exposed to new things as you can. There will probably not be a better time to learn about a wide variety of things.
Most of all, ENJOY YOURSELF!!!
