Arizona State University is a creating a new model for American higher education, an unprecedented combination of academic excellence, entrepreneurial energy and broad access. This New American University is a single, unified institution comprising four differentiated campuses positively impacting the economic, social, cultural and environmental health of the communities it serves. Its research is inspired by real world application, blurring the boundaries that traditionally separate academic disciplines. Arizona State University (ASU) is the largest public research university in the United States under a single administration, with total student enrollment of 67,082 as of fall 2008. It has four campuses, all in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. ASU is governed by the Arizona Board of Regents.

ASU was founded in 1885 as the Tempe Normal School for the Arizona Territory in Tempe, Arizona. It subsequently was renamed Arizona State College in 1945, and, on December 5, 1958, a statewide ballot measure renamed the school "Arizona State University," the only institution of higher education to have achieved university status by popular mandate.

In addition to the original campus in Tempe, ASU comprises three additional campuses: West campus was created in 1984 in northwest Phoenix, Polytechnic campus was opened in 1996 in Mesa, and the Downtown campus in Downtown Phoenix was opened in August 2006. All four campuses are accredited as a single university by the Higher Learning Commission.

In the 2007–2008 academic year, 14,535 students graduated from the university's four campuses. In 2008, 168 National Merit Scholars chose to attend ASU. Many are part of Barrett, The Honors College, which has produced numerous grant and scholarship winners since its founding in 1988. Under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, ASU is classified as a "RU/VH" (research university with very high research activity).

History

Originally named the Tempe Normal School, the institution was founded on March 12, 1885 after John Samuel Armstrong first introduced House Bill 164, "An Act to Establish a Normal school in the Territory of Arizona to the 13th Legislative Assembly of the Arizona Territory. Instruction was instituted on February 8, 1886 under the supervision of Principal Hiram Bradford Farmer. Land for the school was donated by Tempe residents George and Martha Wilson, allowing 33 students to meet in a single room.

I went to ASU 2 years ago and lived in Tempe for a few years. I think it was a great town to live in and pretty much offers what anyone would want. I would recommend living there. The campus is beautiful and large. Parking can be a problem, make sure you apply early or you will get stuck with the dreaded lot 59. I would definately plan on getting a bike to ride around campus, it is much more fun and sometimes your classes can be on opposite ends of a large campus. I did not find off campus housing to be a problem, but rather was bombarded with apartment fairs and deals to get you to move in. It is very much a college town and now that I am in my mid twenties I moved to Scottsdale to get out of the college scene, but while I was in college I loved it. Tempe Town Lake is great, plus there are tons of festivals and parades and sporting events, lots of culture. Lots of bars and restaurants, shopping etc. The bus system does suck, but you can pretty much walk or cab it at night when you go out since it is not too large of a city and everything is concentrated to Mill Avenue. If you want to venture out to Phx, Scottsdale or other cities, you will definately need a car. I thought the campus was very safe, they have 24 hour security and emergency call boxes set up everywhere. The only thing I worried about was getting hit by a car, just don't jaywalk because you will get a ticket and people drive like idiots. Pretty much common sense stuff.

Like most state schools, ASU is easy to get into. Its acceptance rate is 92%, the highest percentage I've ever heard of. There's no minimum GPA or SAT score, but you basically need at least a 500 on each of the sections on the SAT and a 2.5 GPA and you're probably all set.

The question you are asking is a slippery one. From year to year, the entrance requirements change depending on the quality of the students who apply. The same goes for scholarship offers. If you have an applying class who has an average of a 34 on the ACT, well that means you will need a score higher than a 34. When you look for full ride scholarships, you need to factor in GPA, class standing, the degree program you want, your ethnic background, and your financial need. But if you still want a set #. How about a 36 out of 36. When I applied I had a 33, but my gpa was only 3.25, and I graduated in the top 1/4 of my class. was accepted to the school, but no offers for scholarships. My best friend applied the year after with a 33 on the ACT and identical qualificatnions and was given a full ride scholarship.

You shouldn't have a problem getting into ASU with a 3.0. I go to ASU currently and my HS GPA was a 2.7, but I went to HS 8 years ago. If you are applying as a freshman then you probably won't have to apply to a school within the university, most of which are still less than a 3.0 for acceptance.

I already live here on campus and I have to say that Hassayampa, the newest dorms on campus, are VERY nice. They're clean, everything works, and they have a nice atmosphere. However, they are a little far from the MU(the main place for food). If you're looking for locale and a quiet place, then the honors college is amazing. I live in Best B and its cool because my RA is really sweet, and its always pretty quiet. Plus its super close to everything!! However, the dorm rooms themselves arent that great.
