Columbia College

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Columbia College is a community college located in the Yosemite Community College District in Sonora, California. Established in September 1968 as Columbia Junior College, the college dropped "Junior" in 1978. The architectural style of the college is that of California during the Gold Rush era.

At the center of the college is San Diego Reservoir, a man-made lake home to a local duck population. Also on campus property are a series of nature paths as well as a parcourse.

Dr. Joan Smith is the current college president, serving since January of 2007.

The college is home to an active student body whose current president is Jayme Johnson. This group is known as the ASCC (Associated Students of Columbia College) and was established in order to enhance sound student governance and citizenship as well as to express the general will of the students to the administration.

Columbia College offers fifty-six different Certificates of Achievement designed to prepare students for employment in the following disciplines: Automotive Technology, Business Administration, Child Development, Computer Science, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Technology, Forestry Technology, Hospitality Management, Human Services, Natural Resources, Office Technology, and Welding Technology. The college also offers Associate Degrees, and students can complete their general education requirements in preparation to transfer to California State University and The University of California campuses.

The college offers an Academic Achievement Center as well as a Math Lab for those students who seek extra guidance outside of class time.

The college offers an Automotive Technology program. This program is designed to advance the knowledge of those who want to know more about working on automobiles. The good thing about this course is that the people in the community can bring their vehicles to the class to have specific jobs performed on their vehicles during that the class is working on that particular task. The students and the public both benefit from this. The automotive program also offers preventive maintenance for those who need basic service skills.
