The State University of New York at Oneonta (also know as O-State, Oneonta State, and SUCO) is a four-year liberal arts college in Oneonta, New York, United States, with approximately 5,800 students. The College offers many bachelor's degrees and a number of graduate degrees. SUNY Oneonta is particularly renowned for its education program (given its traditional context at the college) and more recently its music industry degree. Kiplinger's magazine has named the SUNY College at Oneonta to its 2007 "Kiplinger 100 Best Values in Public Colleges," which was released in the February 2007 issue of the magazine. This marks the first appearance by SUNY-Oneonta in Kiplinger's nationwide rankings of the top 100 public colleges and universities that "combine outstanding value with a first-class education." In August, U.S. News and World Report ranked the College in the top tier in its rankings of "America's Best Colleges 2007." Oneonta has been cited as the safest campus setting in New York State for colleges of 5,000 or more students and the ninth-safest in the country.
Established in 1889 as a state normal school with the sole mission of training teachers, the College at Oneonta was a founding member of the State University of New York system in 1948. The State University of New York at Oneonta was also used in the 1973 cult horror film The Last House on Dead End Street (aka The Funhouse). The film was made by then SUNY Oneonta student Roger Michael Watkins and featured entirely local talent, including SUNY professor Paul M. Jensen.
A highly selective liberal arts college with a pre-professional focus, SUNY-Oneonta features outstanding and accessible faculty, students committed to academics and community service, exceptional technology, a modern fieldhouse and outstanding athletic facilities, and a beautiful rural campus. Since 1999, Oneonta has renovated all dining and residence halls and implemented over $70 million in facilities improvements. Nationally accredited academic programs (including Education) and over 800 annual scholarship awards have attracted talented classes. Unique facilities include a Music Recording Studio with tunable walls; cutting-edge Computer Art Lab; DNA Computing and Genomics Lab; and new residence hall with apartment-style living.
