It is classified by Carnegie as Research University - High Activity. UT Arlington has a student population of nearly 25,000 and is the third largest institution of the University of Texas System. History

Established in 1895 as Arlington College, it was renamed Carlisle Military Academy (1902), Arlington Training School (1913), and Arlington Military Academy (1916). In March 1917, the school was renamed Grubbs Vocational College and became a state-supported institution for the first time as the northern campus of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University). While part of the A&M system, the school was renamed North Texas Agricultural College (1923) and then Arlington State College (1949). The college achieved four-year status in 1959.

A 1963 reorganization of the Texas A&M University System focused on the College Station campus, even though the enrollment at Arlington State College exceeded enrollment at the College Station campus at the time. The decision by the Texas A&M University governing board to focus on the College Station campus led officials of Arlington State College and a number of Arlington citizens to enlist the support of Governor John Connally and key members of the Texas Legislature to separate Arlington State College from the Texas A&M University System and to join The University of Texas System. On April 23, 1965, Arlington State College officially became a part of The University of Texas System. Its name changed in 1967 to The University of Texas at Arlington.

I got most of my undergrad work done there. It has some top notch professors and it provides excellent student care. It is very ethnically diverse, in fact when I went there, fully 30% of the student body was foreign born. I learned to speak Arabic, and some Vietnamese, and I made some great friends. It was a great education for the money. You can find aparments for reasonable rates, and you can walk to pretty much everywhere. I think it is a good school and I would send my kids there. It is especially prominent in engineering and science degrees.

I transferred to UTA from community college. It's a good school, though I'd really need to know what you're looking for in a college to tell you if it would be a good fit. UTA has strong engineering and nursing programs, and the fine arts and communication programs are good too. It seems to cater well to its very large international student population. The school is trying to overcome its image as a commuter school by adding more on-campus housing and enhancing campus life with things like big name concerts and speakers (Ludacris, Laura Bush), as well as improvements to to the University Center (student hangout). They just built a really nice planetarium, and a cool-looking fitness center is scheduled to open in September. I work for the school paper, The Shorthorn. I'm biased, but I must say it's a great source for news and a great place to work.
Do they have a bathroom inside the dorm??-- or are they outside -- the ones that everyone has to share?
Best Answer
It depends on which dorm you are in. At UT Arlington, some are in the room and others shared between 2-3 rooms in a suite. The most important question is this, who is responsible for cleaning the bathrooms? Is it the the people living in the room/suite or the resident hall cleaning staff? Pray it is the cleaning staff!!!
Hi! I am a student from India looking forward to attend UTA this fall as a graduate student. I wanted to know more about housing on and off campus. Is it reasonable to find houses near the university? If I find a house near richland hills, how can I commute to UTA and how long will it approximately take?

Best Answer
There is an abundance of housing near the university. I would recommend living as near to campus as possible. There is public transportation available that you can get from richland to UTA in about 25 minutes

The University of Texas at Arlington , usually referred to as UT Arlington or UTA, is a nationally recognized doctoral/research university located in Arlington, Texas. UTA has a student population of roughly 25,000 and is the third largest institution of the University of Texas System (after the University of Texas and the University of Texas at San Antonio). It is the second largest academic institution in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex; only the University of North Texas is larger. Established in 1895 as Arlington College, it was renamed Carlisle Military Academy (1902), Arlington Training School (1913), and Arlington Military Academy (1916). In March 1917, the school was renamed Grubbs Vocational College and became a state-supported institution for the first time as an "extension" of the Texas A&M University System. While part of the Texas A&M University System the school was renamed North Texas Agricultural College (1923) and then Arlington State College (1949). The school achieved four-year status in 1959. On April 23, 1965, Arlington State College was transferred to the University of Texas System, and adopted its present name in 1967. The university contains 11 colleges and departments, each listed with its founding date:[1] School of Architecture School of Business Administration School of Education College of Engineering (1959)[2] Graduate School (1965)[3] Honors College College of Liberal Arts School of Nursing College of Science School of Social Work School of Urban and Public Affairs (1967) UTA has strong programs in architecture, engineering, nursing, public affairs, fine arts, and business. UTA's business program consistently ranks among the state's top programs in accounting graduates passing the certified public accountant exam; the most recent survey (for the Spring 2004 exam) showed UTA as the top state program in terms of successful candidates. [1] Unique liberal arts programs include Southwestern Studies and Mexican-American studies. The university is home to a large cartography collection and collections of material relating to the Mexican-American War. UTA houses the Fort Worth Star-Telegram photo archives, a collection representing over 100 years of Dallas-Fort Worth history. UTA has the only accredited architectural masters degree program in the region. UTA is home of a university-based nanotechnology research facility, NanoFab Research and Teaching Facility, one of only three such facilities in the country; the others are at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in California. UTA hosts the Summer Institute of Linguistics, which is affiliated with SIL International, a worldwide non-profit evangelical Christian organization.

SMU, UT-Dallas, and UT-Arlington are in the area and have your major. Certainly any of them is an excellent college for your first year or two - then you can decide if another is better for your career if your grades are good enough to transfer. Of the three, I suggest UT-Arlington as the best engineering department but that is subjective. For what it's worth, the best EE I ever employed was from U Alabama - he talked funny, but could make designs that were pure poetry. Good luck to you
