University of North Dakota School Description

The University of North Dakota is the state’s most comprehensive intensive research university and the primary center for professional education and training. UND has brought in more than $353 million for sponsored programs from internal and external sources over the last five years. UND’s economic impact on the state and region is nearly $1 billion a year.

Founded by the Dakota Territorial Assembly in 1883, six years before statehood, UND was intended to be, and has remained, a university with a strong liberal arts foundation surrounded by a variety of professional and specialized programs. UND is one of only 47 public universities in the nation with both accredited graduate schools of law and medicine. It is admired for its spacious, beautiful campus and extensive resources. The University has earned an international reputation for its academic and research programs.

UND enrolls 12,748 students (fall 2008) in 202 fields of study from baccalaureate through doctoral and professional degrees. 52% come from North Dakota; the rest represent all other states, seven Canadian provinces, and more than 50 nations.

The University is located in Grand Forks, a college town of 50,000 on the Red River of the North separating North Dakota and Minnesota. The campus includes 223 buildings (over 6 million square feet under roof) on 549 acres.

Grand Forks is linked by Interstate 29 to Fargo, N.D., 70 miles to the south, and to Winnipeg, Manitoba, 150 miles to the north. The city is 300 miles northwest of Minneapolis and a day’s drive from Chicago, Milwaukee, and Des Moines. Commercial air service links the Grand Forks International Airport to Minneapolis and on to other destinations worldwide.

The University of North Dakota, as a member of the North Dakota University System, serves the state, the country, and the world community through teaching, research, creative activities, and service. State-assisted, the University's work depends also on federal, private, and corporate sources. With other research universities, the University shares a distinctive responsibility for the discovery, development, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge. Through its sponsorship and encouragement of basic and applied research, scholarship, and creative endeavor, the University contributes to the public well-being.

History

Founding

UND was founded in 1883, six years before North Dakota became a state. Grand Forks native George H. Walsh submitted a bill to the Territorial Legislature of Dakota Territory that called for the new state of North Dakota's university to be located in Grand Forks. The university was viewed by many as the premier state institution to be given to a community; even more so than the state capitol. The first building at UND, Old Main, housed all classrooms, offices, dorm rooms, and a library. In the 1880s, UND consisted of only a few acres of property surrounded by farms and fields. At this time, the campus was nearly two miles west of the city of Grand Forks. Students living off campus had to take a train or a horse and carriage bus, dubbed the "Black Maria", from downtown to the campus.

Yes, Flight costs are not included in university tuition or fees. They are determined on an hourly basis for aircraft and flight instruction, and are in addition to tuition, fees and any other incidental expenses which are normally charged during registration.

Question: Is the University of North Dakota hard to get into?

I'm looking at going there because it close to home, but not too close. I really want to go there since it is convenient and more affordable, but I just want to make sure I have a oretty good chance at getting in. My grades are pretty good, but not phenomenal. So I guess the real question is - Is it pretty easy for an average student to be accepted into UND?

UND. Superior academics, it is located in Grand Forks, a town of about 60,000 people, and there is so much to do. If you like hockey, the team is a Division I championship contender every year, and the games are always cool. The facilities there are top notch, and you would only be a couple of hours from Winnipeg, and a few more to Minneapolis, two great places to go on the weekend. This city is very safe, as North Dakota has one of the lowest crime rates in the country. It is a relatively small city with good transportation so it is easy to get around. Finally, the city is growing rapidly, and new business open every year for good shopping and eating. Hope this helps a little.

Question: Which university has the best aviation program in the US?

Is University of North Dakota still the best?

Best Answer

It is still recognized as the best. It goes far beyond any flight school. If you want to learn to fly, go somewhere else. If you want to becone the airport manager, go to UND.
