School Description
Provided by Harris-Stowe State UniversityHarris-Stowe State University's primary mission, as set forth in Senate Bill 153, is to address the higher education needs of the metropolitan St. Louis region. Toward the fulfillment of this mandate, the university offers the following academic opportunities: (1) a solid General Education curriculum which serves as the foundation for the university's various baccalaureate degree programs in the three broad professional areas, (2) baccalaureate degree programs in (a) Business Administration, (b) Teacher Education and (c) Urban Specializations.
Harris-Stowe State University traces its origins back to 1857 when an all-white normal school was established, later to be named Harris Teachers College in honor of William Torrey Harris, nationally known as the progressive superintendent of the St. Louis schools and later U.S. Commissioner of Education. It was the first of its kind west of the Mississippi and one of the only teachers’ colleges in the country to be an integral part of a public school system. Also founded by the St. Louis Public School System was Sumner Normal School, established in 1890 for future black teachers of elementary schools in the City of St. Louis. It was later named Stowe Teachers College in honor of Harriet Beecher Stowe, the novelist and abolitionist.
The two schools merged in 1954, at first retaining the name Harris Teachers College but later changing it to Harris-Stowe College by popular request. The College moved to the present building in 1963. Harris-Stowe became a State College in 1979, and in 1981 received State approval for a new degree program, Bachelor of Science in Urban Education, the only program of its kind at the undergraduate level in the United States. Harris-Stowe was granted University status in 2005, and hosts collaborative graduate degree programs with the University of Missouri – St. Louis.
As a small urban university in St. Louis, the school enjoys many entertainment benefits on nearby Grand Avenue, Downtown and the Loop District. You can visit this urban campus anytime, but must contact the school to arrange classroom visits.

History
Founded in 1857, Harris-Stowe State University is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Missouri. During most of this period, the emphasis focused on teacher education. However, Senate Bill 153 enacted in 1993 enhanced the mission of Harris-Stowe to include a wider selection of degree opportunities. Founded by the St. Louis Public Schools as a normal school, it was the first public teacher education institution west of the Mississippi River and the twelfth such institution in the United States.
Harris-Stowe State University was called Harris-Stowe State College until it was renamed in August 2005. It has a long tradition of teacher education and is also the only historically black university (HBCU) serving the needs of the metropolitan St. Louis community. Do You Hurr Me?!

Question: I'm thinking about attending Harris Stowe State University in St. Louis. How is it there?19 months ago
Best AnswerIf you are asking about the university, I have two nieces who are both there on scholarships and they dont have any complaints. The school itself is located right in the heart of midtown which means that a lot of the campus is concrete and they dont offer as many degree choices as some larger universities but you will get a good education. If you are asking about St. Louis as a whole its a nice town to go to school in. We have lots of things to do and many of them are free or low cost plus I think you will find that most of the residents are pretty laid back and friendly. However, the public transportation isnt the best and the weather can be very cold and snowy in the winter and hot and humid in the summer. |
