Elon University

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Elon University is a private, liberal arts university located in Elon, North Carolina.

The University was founded in 1889 by the Christian Church, which is now the United Church of Christ. Formerly known as Elon College, it became Elon University on June 1, 2001. The historic 575 acre (2.3 km²) campus has been designated a botanical garden and features oak trees, brick sidewalks, fountains and lakes. Elon is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is ranked as one of the top southern master's-level universities by U.S.News & World Report.

History

In 1889 North Carolina Legislature issued a charter for Elon College. William S. Long was the founder and the first president. The original student body consisted of 76 students. In 1923 a fire destroyed most of the campus, including school records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. The Board of Trustees voted to rebuild immediately. Many of the buildings that were erected in the years following the disastrous fire still stand today and make up the bedrock of Elon's campus.

Elon has changed drastically from its longstanding status in the past 25 years, when it was solely an undergraduate college. Until 25 years ago, students were almost all from North Carolina, and mainly local residents commuting from family homes. Now, about 66 percent of Elon's students come from out-of-state.

Many prominent figures have visited and spoken at Elon, including Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, former U.S. Secretary of State General Colin L. Powell, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, and astronaut John Glenn.

Academics

The university includes Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences; the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business; the School of Communications; the School of Education; and the School of Law. Master's programs are offered in business administration and education, and doctoral programs include physical therapy and law. Elon operates on a 4-1-4 academic calendar, including a four-week term in January known as Winter Term. There are 48 majors to choose from.

What do you think of Elon University? Is it a good school? How is the surrounding area? I want to major in education and I also would like to study abroad and I have heard Elon is strong in both of those areas. Lastly, are Elon students more liberal or conservative?

It's a novel - but hopefully helpful: Elon is little known - right now - but boy is it a rising star. It is considered "highly selective", as it receives nearly 10,000 applications for 1275 spots. The campus is fabulous - and the classes are small. The educational structure is set up with four credit classes, so that you take fewer classes during a semester, but are better able to stay on track to graduate on time. It has two full semesters, as well as a winter term - which, while not required, 97% of students participate in. The students use that winter term to take an additonal class - or study abroad. Many students also study abroad for a whole semester - or a whole year. Their study abroad program is a top choice for US News and World Report - as are the research facilities, service learning and many other areas. The surrounding area is...probably the best words...a little boring :-) The city of Burlington touches the town of Elon, and it has about 40,000 people - and all the amenities you'd want - but it's not going to be an exciting time :-). People can always find entertainment - but it is Burlington North Carolina. You are, however, less than an hour from Raleigh - and very close to UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Greensboro, Duke and other great colleges and universities. Elon University strives to provide major activities for the students, and I have not heard anyone complaining they are super bored. As for conservative or liberal - you're going to find all types. This school is very service oriented, which tends to draw a more conservative crowd. It is also private - cost of attendance (room/board/tuition/fees/books, etc) for the upcoming school year is just about $33,000 - but financial aid is there for those that need it. A private school also tends to draw a preppier, slightly more conservative group as well. Finally - Elon used to be Elon College - and it was a teaching college. It has an excellent Teaching Fellows program and their roots in the education world are deep - so they are a good choice for an Education major. Check out Elon's website as well as Princeton Review - it's a great school.
i'm a high school junior. This year im only in 2 pre-AP classes, physics and french but i took mostly PreAP freshman and sophomore year. I'm in advanced math and sciences too but the math isnt Preap. So far my grades are high B and low A. i think my weighted Gpa is 3.73 and my unweighted is around a 3.4. My ACT is a 27 but that was the first time and i took it with little preparation, my sat scores werent so strong so im mainly focusing on my ACT. i do alot of volunteer at my church and i do art as an extracurricular. im pretty sure i can get into Texas A and M but i want to get into a beter school. I was looking at Elon University and i really like it so far. Is there a good chance of getting in? i read the acceptance rate is about 45%. Can you tell me anything else about this school? and does anyone know anything about clemson too? thanks

You shouldn't have too much difficulty getting into Elon and or Clemson (they both have about the same "admissions rating"). To solidify your chances, take some AP classes your senior year. While an improvement in your ACT would always be nice, it really should be good enough to get into Elon and Clemson as it is right now. While a Clemson alum is free to correct me, I don't think conservative-leaning Clemson is particuarly renown for anything except some of its sports. It's not bad by any stretch, just not particularly spectacular (it's a decent-to-good university). I wouldn't really recommend it unless you live in SC and get in-state rates. Elon is a fairly small school of ~4500 and is regionally known for its journalism, business, and education programs. It also has a very pretty campus and is kind of a "jock school" with a big Greek scene.

hey. i applied to elon university for admission this past November and am more than likely going there. based on your criteria i'd say you have a very high chance of getting accepted. across my high school career i've taken four ap classes, two honors classes, 1760 on the sats and 25 on the acts, a weighted gpa of 3.65, and a lot of extracurriculars and community service. so, comparing your criteria to mine, i'd say you have a pretty high chance of getting accepted. good luck though =]
