Bryant University - Smithfield

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Bryant University is a four-year, highly selective, private university located in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Until August 2004, it was known as Bryant College. The school's current campus is referred to as the Tupper Campus. Bryant University, which comprises the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Business, is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the AACSB International.

History

Bryant University was founded in 1863 as a branch of Bryant and Stratton. In 1916, the college was sold and merged with Rhode Island Commercial School. Bryant became non-profit in 1949 and offered its first master's program in 1969. Bryant was originally located in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, but moved to its current campus in Smithfield, Rhode Island when the founder of Tupperware, Earl Silas Tupper, a Bryant University alumnus, donated the current of land to be the new campus.

Bryant continued to be a generally successful institution throughout the 1970s and '80s, but began to face serious problems in the 1990s. Applications and interest in the college were way down and enrollment had dropped below 2,000 students. Five of the school's sixteen dormitories sat completely empty. Although the campus was clean and well-maintained, Bryant's facilities were old, haggard and in dire need of upgrading. Bryant continued to lose money throughout the early '90s, where the school had a $1.7 million deficit.; as of 2007 the school now has a $178.1 million endowment showing a change of +$100 million in less than 10 years. Ronald K. Machtley, a former Navy captain and U.S. Representative was hired as the new president in 1996. When Machtley arrived he immediately began working with faculty, students and the Board of Trustees to ensure the future of Bryant. He announced an ambitious capital campaign and building project to build new facilities and upgrade old ones. In the past six years, Bryant has built a new library, athletic center, communications and IT complex, residence hall, upgraded all athletic fields, and completely renovated the main classroom building and the student union. The school also changed its name to Bryant University in 2004 and school has become more selective than ever before in its history. The most recent historical event that took place at Bryant was on Thursday, February 28, 2008, when former U.S. President Bill Clinton campaigned at Bryant University in support of Hillary Clinton's bid for Democratic presidential nominee. This was the first time in the schools history that either a former U.S. President or Presidential Candidate came to Bryant University to give a speech. Also, in 2008 the 41st, and former, President of the United States George H. W. Bush gave the 2008 Commencement Address on May 17, 2008. Bush received an honorary degree from the University. Thus, within months of each other, Bryant had two of the only three former U.S Presidents still living, to come speak on campus.

Question: How good a school is Bryant University?

I have been accepted and wonder how strong its business program is. How is it compared to Bentley? Thank you in advance

Bryant isn't bad at all, but it does get overshadowed by the other two pure business schools in the region - Bentley and Babson. I'd rank them as follows: Babson, Bentley, Bryant. I like this rankings table, of undergrad business schools. It may help you: http://bwnt.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/undergrad_bschool_2009/ Bryant has a good reputation.

Question: Anyone know anything about Bryant University?

I'm looking at colleges right now and I really like Bryant University, but I want some more information about it. Can anyone tell me anything?

really good business school in rhode island..not that easy to get into...you could compare it to northeastern i guess

Question: Would I fit in at Bryant University?

Ive heard that Bryant is a "preppy, wealthy, country club like" school. Im looking at Bryant but im very laid back, easy going, i like to get dressed up once and a while, but im usually a jeans and a t-shirt kinda girl. I like to party, maybe smoke a little weed. Is the majority of the student body really preppy and stuck up. Would i fit in. I live on Cape Cod so its not like i dont deal with preppy kids now. Most of my friends are preppy, but idk if i would fit in right.

Go to these websites: www.petersons.com www.princetonreview.com ...to find out the statistical info regarding any schools you are interested in, and what students are saying about the academics, environment, and student body. You must use wisdom and strategy in appying to college. You need to look at *many* factors to ensure a "good fit", such as: Does it have the programs you are most interested in? Do you want to be in a big city or a more rural environment? Do you prefer a school with a very large population or a smaller, more personable school? How selective are the schools you are checking out? (how many students are applying vs. how many are accepted -- what is the minimum SAT score they will accept -- what is the minimal GPA they will accept, and what range are most of their students in) How expensive? What type of endowments are available? Scholarships? What percentage of students are getting scholarships? Is the school known for its academics or its party atmosphere? Is it a liberal or conservative environment? What do the students say they like/don't like about the school? But don't choose just one college, because if they don't accept you, *you're stuck*. One of my favorite features of the Princeton Review site is the "What Students Say About..." which offers actual student comments about the academics, environment, and the student body. Here's the info on BRYANT: What Bryant Students Say About... Student Body "Since it's a business school with all serious business students for the most part, it excludes a wide diversity of people and their quirks," Bryant students observe. "Every day, either you're dressing in a business suit or you're in your daily clothing (mainly Abercrombie & Fitch and North Face and other high-end brand names, such as Burberry, Gucci, Seven, etc)." In other words, "Idiosyncrasy is not encouraged; business etiquette and manners are a must at most times in this school." Most here are "preppy and financially stable. There are not many people who come from nonwealthy backgrounds." They can be cliquish; one student explains, "People rarely leave their own groups and the drama caused by much of it can get annoying by senior year." The school "has a sizeable population of international students, including students from China, India, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, and Italy. These students, many of whom belong to the Multicultural Student Union, are among the most active members of the Bryant community and take part in a number of events to educate Bryant students and faculty about different races and cultures." What Bryant Students Say About... Academics Bryant University offers some majors outside of business and management, but there's no doubt that these courses remain the school's bread and butter. Students report that "every class, including the liberal arts classes . . . will involve business in one way or another." Another trumpets, "All my sociology, psychology, even ecology classes somehow discussed the business world within them!" Technologically, the school goes all-out, with "an enormous amount of resources on campus, including a simulated trading floor of the NYSE. Also, the entire campus is now wireless, so students can connect to the Internet with their laptops anywhere." Studying in such technologically advanced facilities means that "students can relate classes to the real world. We really do live in a business environment." The school's "student-centered" approach distinguishes it as well; "Everything on campus is designed to help out the student body, from the student programming, to the facilities, to the faculty. It is a very nurturing environment," explains one undergrad. Students also appreciate the "strong alumni relations, which help with internships and job placement." Solid programs in accounting, finance, marketing, and management have earned Bryant "a strong academic reputation. The school challenges its students to think creatively, both alone and in group settings, to reach goals." What Bryant Students Say About... Campus Life Because many "Students at Bryant have—on top of a full course load—a job and/or internship, are members of a minimum of two organizations and/or sports, and hold some type of position of leadership," undergraduates "have little free time during the week." The campus is a very work-friendly environment, students tell us; "The abundance of technology on our campus-—television monitors in almost every corner that you look, Voice Over IP phones in the dorm rooms, wireless Internet connectivity all over campus—creates an environment where students can work hard, relax a little, and work some more." The "very clean and well-landscaped [campus] is basically in the middle of the woods," providing "peace to study," but with the benefit "of a great city not far away." While weekdays are devoted to work and clubs, "Thursday through Sunday there are parties or people going out to Providence who you can catch a ride with, with more studying on the weekends at intermittent times." Lexi, just remember, don't limit yourself. After you have done your research and you are ready to apply to college: Pick two schools that are very selective "long shots", two that are "maybe" schools, and two that are "sure things". Apply to all of them. Wait. After a few months, the acceptance letters will arrive, and you will be able to make a great choice! Hope all this info helps to get you exactly where you want to be, with no regrets. Best wishes!

It really depends on what your major is, if you want to study anything in the "Business Field" then its a really good school. It is rated as one of the most "wired" (lots of technology)campuses and most of the faculty have earned their P.h.d's. Bryant is competitive with Bentley and Babson and also offers many resources for seniors looking to find jobs. Over all Bryant is a very good school, the academics are challenging the people are nice, and most likely you will get a great education for your money...
