Description

The primary mission of the University of South Carolina, a multi-campus public institution serving the entire state of South Carolina, is the education of the state's diverse citizens through teaching, research and creative activity, and service.

USC Salkehatchie provides access to educational excellence and resources characteristic of a comprehensive research university for the purpose of enhancing the overall quality of life of its citizenry.

The Salkehatchie campus was established in 1965 as a regional center of the University of South Carolina as the result of local civic commitment and momentum. In late 1964, a group of residents from Allendale, Bamberg, and Hampton counties organized a movement to create a regional campus. The General Assembly of South Carolina responded the next year by creating the Western Carolina Higher Education Commission, which is composed of two Governor-appointed representatives from each of the participating counties. Barnwell County later joined the compact and Colleton County followed in 1984. The campus was given the name Salkehatchie because the Salkehatchie River runs through all five counties that support the campus.

The highest academic officer on the Salkehatchie campus is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs ("Academic Dean"). The faculty is organized in four divisions: Social Sciences, Arts and Languages, Mathematics and Science, and Professional Studies.

Students enrolled at USC Salkehatchie can obtain associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and graduate degrees. They can also complete the first two years of higher education locally before transferring to other institutions.

Students completing the first two years of higher education at USC Salkehatchie can transfer to other campuses of the University of South Carolina with minimal effort. Within the constraints of program requirements, students completing the first two years of higher education at USC Salkehatchie can transfer credits from courses in which they earned at least a C to practically every university in the United States.
