Salish Kootenai College School Description

The mission of Salish Kootenai College is to provide quality post-secondary educational opportunities for Native Americans locally and from throughout the United States. The College will strive to provide opportunities for individual self-improvement to promote and help maintain the cultures of the Confederated Tribes of the Flathead Indian Nation.

The Salish Kootenai College general education curriculum supports the mission and goals of the College. The curriculum introduces students to major areas of knowledge in humanities, Fine arts, natural sciences, mathematics, social sciences and Native American studies. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, cultural awareness, citizenship and communication skills. Consistent with SKC’s mission as a tribal college, general education instruction advances knowledge and awareness of Native American cultures, particularly the Salish, Pend d’Oreilles, and Kootenai tribal cultures, histories, and languages.

Salish Kootenai College offers Baccalaureate Degree programs, Associate of Arts Degrees, Associate of Applied Science Degrees, and Certi? cate programs. The College is designed for you. Classes are small and you will get much individual attention. We all will really care for you and you will feel wanted and accepted here. We will work hard to help you be a successful student. We are very proud of our College campus and its facilities. We have state of the art classroom equipment, nice buildings, and attractive campus grounds. The beautiful Mission mountains serve as a wonderful backdrop to our campus.

Salish Kootenai College is located in the center of the Flathead Indian Reservation in western Montana. The campus is located east of Highway 93, opposite the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Office Complex in Pablo, Montana. The Flathead Reservation is surrounded on the east, west, and south by mountains. To the north is Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. The beautiful Flathead River winds its way through the Reservation from north to south. Within the Reservation’s boundaries are the National Bison Range in Moiese and the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge. Other places of interest in the nearby western Montana area are Glacier National Park, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area, the Lolo National Forest, and the Flathead National Forest.Many recreational areas are accessible both on and near the Reservation. Winter skiers are within a two-hour drive to these public ski areas: Snow Bowl, north of Missoula; Marshall Ski area, east of Missoula; Blacktail in Lakeside; and Big Mountain, at Whitefish. The winter months provide many opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice-fishing. Lake and stream fishing, camping, swimming, hiking, and rafting are enjoyed throughout the spring, summer,and fall.

Salish Kootenai College (SKC) is a Native American tribal college based in Pablo, Montana which serves the Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreilles tribes. There are approximately 1,100 students attending the college; enrollment is not limited to Native American students.

Prior to 1978, it was a branch campus of Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC). In 1981, the college formally disassociated itself from FVCC and became completely self-governing. It is member of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium.

SKC offers 7 Bachelor's degree programs, 13 Associate degree programs, and 7 certificate programs. Most of the degree programs are career-oriented, though students can elect to take courses of study in fields such as the liberal arts and Native American Studies.

Athletics

Nicknamed the "Bison" and "Lady Bison" Although they are not within any athletic association. SKCs men's basketball program has won 3 consecutive American Indian Higher Education Consortium Basketball Championships (05, 06, 07) and the women have won 2 (03, 07)
