History

German Lutherans founded Carthage in 1847 in Hillsboro, Illinois as The Literary and Theological Institute of the Lutheran Church of the Far West. In 1852 the college moved to Springfield, Illinois and operated under the name Illinois State University. However, the college closed in 1869 due to budgetary reasons. In 1870 the college was reopened as Carthage College in Carthage, Illinois. Due to dwindling enrollment numbers during the 1950s, Carthage decided to open another campus in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1962, intending to eventually relocate the college there. The Wisconsin and Illinois campuses ran simultaneously until 1964, when the Illinois campus closed its doors and the college and its old traditions were moved to Wisconsin. This was the cause of much discontent among students at the Illinois campus who were long under the impression that the Illinois and Wisconsin campuses would both be operated by Carthage. In the last five years, a new state of the art library (Hedberg Library) and athletic center (Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center) have been opened, and the campus welcomed a renovation of the old library which turned it into the Clausen Center for World Business. In the new student village overlooking Lake Michigan, The Oaks, residences feature semi-private suites, cooking facilities, and media lounges on each floor. Currently there are three completed "Oaks buildings" with a fourth under construction.

College Advice on Carthage College

Question: Anyone know about Carthage College?

Is it a good school, is it highly selective? What ACT and GPA do they look for? Is there a percentage of Black People there ?

Best Answer

Carthage is considered selective. Each application is reviewed individually. For fall 2008, the average ACT score of incoming classes is around 24 and the average GPA is round 3.3/4.0 or so. Applications are increasing annually, and the school is becoming more selective as a result. About 85-90% of Carthage students are white, non-hispanic, which is very typical for a private liberal arts college. Carthage does have a number of diversity organizations on campus, such as Black Student Union (BSU), United Women of Color, Gospel Messengers, Sigma Omega Sigma sorority, and a hip hop dance team. These organizations are open to students of all races, but are predominately populated by African American students. The campus is breathtaking, located on the shore of Lake Michigan. The location, midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, also provides a variety of internship and cultural opportunties. There has been a building boom on campus in recent years, with the addition of many modern facilities (library, athletic center, residence halls, a planned student center). I'm a Carthage alumnus, so I'll admit that I'm biased. But I think Carthage is definitely worth including on your college search list.
