Hampden-Sydney College School Description

Since 1775 the mission of Hampden-Sydney College has been to form good men and good citizens in an atmosphere of sound learning. To fulfill this mission, the college holds high ideals in each of three areas: character, curriculum, and climate. The College expects its students to be gentlemen of good moral character and to be active and informed participants in the life of their communities. Through their work in classes, students realize that learning is fulfilling work, and fulfilling work draws on learning. In their years at the College, students develop ways of learning that will make their lives productive, as they refine their abilities to read and think critically, analytically, creatively, and independently; acquire an integrated education in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences; and pursue deeper studies in one or more major areas. Overall, the education students gain at Hampden-Sydney and the work they do here help prepare them to be responsible, productive citizens. The intellectual and moral climate at the College supports the development of graduates who are prepared for an active life informed both by theory and by structured, considered experience.

For 233 years Hampden-Sydney College has been creating good men and good citizens in an environment of sound learning. Although most high school guys tend to have a very negative initial reaction to the idea of attending a men's college (most of the guys in the Admissions Office did), once students take a closer look they tend to understand the many benefits of a single-sex learning environment. Not only do most Hampden-Sydney students find the single-sex classroom environment more open and free for discussion, but they also come to appreciate the close friendships that develop because of the weekday social structure. Many studies have come out over the last few years showing, and several magazines have documented, the advantages of a single-sex academic environment. It truly is an amazing way to spend four of the best years of your life. "Hampden-Sydney: Where men are men and women are guests."

Hampden-Sydney is located in the middle of Southside Virginia - home to some of the best turkey and deer hunting on the east coast. Hampden-Sydney's 1240-acre campus has three small lakes stocked with bass and other assorted game fish. For those who seek a larger challenge, the area around campus has amazing hunting and fishing options. Briery Creek is located 5 minutes to the south and is home not only to some of the best largemouth bass fishing in the nation, but also offers students the opportunity to hunt deer, duck, dove, and turkey. Sandy River Reservoir, about 15 minutes from campus, offers additional opportunities for fishing. Many H-SC students are members of local hunt clubs and will take other students with them. Also, some local farmers give students hunting rights in exchange for helping out occasionally on their property.

Hampden-Sydney College

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Hampden-Sydney College is a liberal arts college for men located in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia. Founded in 1775, Hampden-Sydney is the oldest private charter in the South, as well as the 10th oldest institution of higher education and one of only three four-year, all-men's liberal arts colleges in the United States.

Overview

Hampden-Sydney enrolls 1,106 students from thirty states and several foreign countries, and emphasizes a rigorous and traditional liberal arts curriculum.

Along with Wabash College and Morehouse College, Hampden-Sydney is one of only three remaining traditional all-male colleges. The school's mission is to "form good men and good citizens in an atmosphere of sound learning." As such, Hampden-Sydney has one of the strictest Honor Codes of any college or university. Upon entering as a student, each man pledges that he will not lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate those who do while he is a student at Hampden-Sydney. The pledge takes place during a solemn ceremony after a lecture by the school's President and Dean of Students. This simply-worded code of behavior applies to the students on or off campus. Though it is strict, the justice system is student-run, allowing for a trial of peers, adjudicated by a court of students.

Every student must prepare for and pass the Rhetoric Proficiency Exam, a three-hour essay that is graded upon coherence of argument, quality of argument, style in which the argument is presented, and grammatical correctness. To prepare, the college requires each student to pass two Rhetoric classes that are usually taken the first two semesters a student is at Hampden-Sydney. After graduating, many alumni have stated that the Rhetoric Program was the most valuable aspect in the Hampden-Sydney education.

Hampden-Sydney is the parent institution of Union Theological Seminary (Presbyterian) and the Medical College of Virginia; founded 1812 and 1838, respectively. In 1968, the state legislature merged the Medical College of Virginia with the Richmond Professional Institute forming what are the MCV and Monroe Park campuses of Virginia Commonwealth University.
