School Description

Provided by Berry College

For more than a century, Berry College has emphasized the importance of a comprehensive and balanced education that unites a challenging academic program with opportunities for meaningful work experience, spiritual and moral growth, and significant service to others. This commitment to providing a firsthand educational experience – expressed as “Head, Heart and Hands” by college founder Martha Berry – remains just as relevant today as it was when the institution was founded in 1902.

Nationally recognized for both quality and value, Berry is an independent, coeducational college of approximately 1,850 students that offers exceptional undergraduate degree programs in the sciences, humanities, arts and social sciences, as well as undergraduate and master’s level opportunities in business and teacher education. Students are encouraged to enrich their academic studies through participation in one of the nation’s premier on-campus work experience program, and more than 90 percent take advantage of this unique opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience prior to graduation.

Berry College is a comprehensive liberal-arts college with Christian values. The college furthers our students’ intellectual, moral and spiritual growth; proffers lessons that are gained from worthwhile work done well; and challenges them to devote their learning to community and civic betterment. Berry emphasizes an educational program committed to high academic standards, values based on Christian principles, practical work experience and community service in a distinctive environment of natural beauty. It is Berry’s goal to make an excellent private liberal-arts education accessible to talented students from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds.

Berry offers an unusually beautiful environment for learning on its 26,000-acre campus, one of the world's largest. Fields, forests, lakes and mountains provide scenic beauty in a protected natural setting.

Berry College is an American accredited, private, four-year liberal arts college located in Mount Berry, Georgia.

History

Berry was founded in 1902 by Martha McChesney Berry as a school for rural youth at a time when few public schools existed in Georgia. Seven years later, a girls' school was added, with a junior college being established in 1926 and a four-year college in 1930. Graduate programs outside the liberal arts were added in 1972. Financial contributions from Henry Ford and the Ford Foundation, along with donations from others have helped the institution establish itself as a leading liberal arts college in the southeastern United States.

Berry College offers students Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education and Education Specialist degrees from the four schools making up the academic program. The liberal arts education includes a general education program coupled with the student's selected major. Question: Berry college, Georgia?

Hey has anyone been to berry college, Georgia? Or anywhere near it, if so what is the town like?? Im thinking of maybe going here for my year in America and was just wondering what Georgia is like. Thanks!

Best Answer

It's goregous! I often thought about attending Berry College but later picked a different school. It's a beautiful school and my friends who went there loved the place. Although its a private college, the price is naturally going to be higher than your traditional school. However, they work very hard to get you financial assistance. My friends said the financial department is amazing there. Overall, beautiful campus, great education, and overall I'd recommend it. Good luck!

Question: Is it true that the forests surrounding Berry College are home to an army of armor plated chinchillas?

Always been a thought of mine. Just wanted to know.

Best Answer

The urban myth begins about 1909 when Martha Berry herself was seeking a unique pet and mascot for the school. Dogs, cats and even swine did not meet the needs of the head mistress, nor did miniture horses or parrots. Nothing found could match the unique standards set at Berry. Late in 1928, she discovered a little known rodent like animal in California, recently imported from South America. This was the Chinchilla. Now the price she had to pay and the protective nature of one, M Chapman of CA., demanded she do something to protect the precious investment. To do that is was told that she had fashioned elaborate suits or armor for protect the valuable fur of her beloved Chinchillidae rodents. No expense was spared and soon the animals were decked out in a fanciful suit of armor. Now this bejeweled plating was never veiwed by the public, indeed, few people ever say it, or the animals themselves. The armored plating has never been found in the estate of Ms Berry or in the archives of the school. BUT, It is said.... Late in fall, during a full moon, in a rainless Georgian woods, there can be seen, shimmering like a tiny bobble in a glass of champaign, near a lake of glass like water near the Berry College Campus,,,, two Armor Plated Chinchillas, frolicking with each other while eating tender grasses and leaving there dimunitive pellets of fertilizer in return for the meager meal .... This is the best kept secret of tourism in the area.

Question: Which College do you think is better; SPSU or Berry College?

I need to decide what soccer team I want to try and play for. So which one do you think has a better team, Southern Polytechnic in Mariettta or Berry College in Rome?

Best Answer

I'd go with Berry College. They're a good team (and sometimes appear in the national rankings). Also, they put much more of an emphasis on sports than SPSU. It'd be a good, solid choice. Best of luck!

Question: What are the students of Berry College like?

I may be attending Bery College near Rome, Georgia in the fall. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the people there are like, for instance how friendly do the people seem? Someone told me that since it is a private school there may be more stuck up people....just wondering if this really is the case..thanks!

Best Answer

They are like any other students in other colleges...but I think there is a higher percentage of students who are ambitious and likely to be successful. They aren't stuck up unless you give them the position to boost about themselves. I'd sugest to find people who have integrity and same goals as you. They are like every ordinary student who goes to college, cept their lifestyle is more high class.

Question: Can a non-christian Person be happy at Berry College in Georgia?

I've been accepted to Berry College near Rome, GA. I applied because of its excellent Liberal Arts Reputation, but so much of what I read about it focuses on the heavy Christianity that is part of life there. Is there anyone that knows Berry that can tell me if there is tolerance for non-christians at Berry, or are they really looked down on or worse, is someone always trying to convert them?

Best Answer

Yes, you can. One of my friends is about to graduate from there and she has never pronounced any type of faith. I almost think there're more non-Christains there than those strongly religious and that has a lot to do with the liberal arts. Plus, you know, you're outnumbered by deer there 22 to 1! How can you beat that! LOL :-)
