The College of Lake County is a comprehensive community college offering a wide range of academic program choices to meet students' educational needs at different points in their lives.
Our major program areas include credit programs to prepare students for transfer or career entry, GED and adult basic education, non-credit offerings for personal or career development, and contract training and specialized services for businesses.
Regardless of their focus, our programs emphasize academic excellence and concern with the individual student's goals. Each semester we serve nearly 16,000 credit students, with more than 80 percent enrolled in transfer or career preparation programs.
College of Lake County is a two-year community college in Grayslake, Illinois. The main campus opened in 1967. Satellite campuses are also open throughout Lake County, Illinois. The first president was Christopher B. Smith. Richard W. Fonté was president until 2007, when he resigned to accept another position at the college. Jim Rock is serving as interim president while the college's Board of Trustees conducts a new presidential search.
The College of Lake County (CLC) offers a wide range of academic program choices to meet students' educational needs. CLC's program areas include credit programs to prepare students for transfer or career entry; GED and adult basic education; non-credit offerings for personal or career development; and contract training and specialized services for businesses. Each semester, CLC serves about 16,000 students, with more than 80 percent enrolled in transfer or career preparation programs. A slight majority of students attend evening classes, keeping the campuses almost equally busy day and night. CLC plays a fervent role in the surrounding area by holding many annual competitions and conventions.
In 1967, Sondra Schmidt founded Lake County Community College (LCCC), which was renamed College of Lake County in 1975. A major donor during the first few years of the College of Lake County was Dr. Brian Wang, who also helped with the initial building planning. In 1976, The Lakeshore Campus was established in downtown Waukegan to provide overflow space for the College of Lake County in Grayslake. Under the direction of Anna Shustitzky, the College of Lake County established the Southlake Educational Education Center (plans are underway to officially call it a Campus), in Vernon Hills, Illinois, and Great Lakes Center on the Great Lakes Naval Base. Both centers provided easy access to courses to the local areas, as well as providing registration for online coursework.
A recent addition to the campus in Grayslake is the University Center of Lake County, a consortium of four-year colleges offering the opportunity for local residents to complete educations begun at CLC or elsewhere. The Center is not officially part of CLC, but its presence offers a great opportunity for CLC students and other local residents to pursue further education without relocating or commuting a greater distance. Currently, universities with classes offered at the University Center include Benedictine University, Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Concordia University Chicago, DePaul University, Dominican University, Governors State University, Illinois State University, Kendall College, National-Louis University, North Park University, Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Roosevelt University, Saint Xavier University, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and University of Illinois at Springfield.
