Andrews University School Description

Andrews University, a distinctive Seventh-day Adventist Christian institution, transforms its students by educating them to seek knowledge and affirm faith in order to change the world.

From the very start, back in 1874, Andrews University has placed serious scholarship, quality research and a strong focus on practical Christianity first on the list of things we think are important about attendance at a Christian university. We started out small. Mr. Bell, a teacher, started a tiny school with only twelve students in Battle Creek, Michigan. This was the birth of what we now know as Andrews University. Today, Andrews is the best-known Adventist educational institution in the world.

At Andrews we are serious about giving you choices. We offer options in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies. If you feel like spending a year abroad, you can choose from an impressive range of opportunities at Andrews affiliate schools or service posts around the globe. We are real people at Andrews. Whatever it is you choose to do here, we aim to make sure that you achieve that balance between theory and practice, and that you experience growth on your personal spiritual journey.

We are named after John Nevins Andrews (1829-1883), the biggest thinker in the 19th century Adventist Church. He was also the first sponsored missionary that the Church sent overseas. J.N. Andrews’ example of careful thought and compassionate action in Christian life is something that we have taken to heart. Our motto is "Seek knowledge. Affirm faith. Change the world."

Students from across the United States and the globe are attracted to Andrews because of what we stand for and what we offer. U.S. News and World Report says that Andrews is one of the most culturally diverse universities in the nation.

Nestled among the rolling hills, wooded streams, and quaint lakeside villages that pepper the shores of Lake Michigan, Andrews’s idyllic setting is perfect for outdoor recreation in every season. No matter what your niche is—water sports, winter sports, extreme sports—you’ll find plenty of opportunities to escape and unwind doing something you love. Better still, there are groups of Andrews fanatics for just about every sport under the sun, so you'll always be in good company and have an excuse to break out and try something new. Don’t miss out—dive into the Southwest Michigan sporting scene, and cash in that study break you've earned!

Andrews University

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Andrews University is a Seventh-day Adventist university in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Founded in 1874 as Battle Creek College in Battle Creek, Michigan, it was the first higher education facility started by Seventh-day Adventists, and today is the flagship university of the Seventh-day Adventist school system.

History

Andrews University was founded as a small, Seventh-day Adventist school called Battle Creek College in 1874. In 1901, the school moved from Battle Creek, Michigan to its current location in Berrien Springs. It is said that everything the school had was packed up in 16 boxcars and sent on its way. The school was renamed Emmanuel Missionary College, or EMC for short.

The school continued to grow slowly through the early 20th century. In the 1940s, Nethery Hall, the current location of the College of Arts and Sciences, was built as the administration building. In 1959 the graduate program and theological seminary of Potomac University were relocated from Washington, D.C. and joined with the school in Berrien Springs. Because of the addition of the graduate programs and the seminary in 1960, the school was renamed Andrews University in honor of John Nevins Andrews, an Adventist scholar and the first officially sponsored overseas missionary for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Today the seminary is known as the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary.

In 1974, the undergraduate school was reorganized into the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Technology. The School of Business was established in 1980, and the School of Education in 1983. In 1993 the architecture department was organized into the Division of Architecture, and has since established itself as one of the leading architecture schools of the new urbanism in the United States.

On Thursday, April 11 2007, President Niels-Erik Andreasen announced at a special chapel assembly that the university had just received a gift totalling $8.5 million. The anonymous donors requested the money be spent on the following: Construction of the new entrance on Old US 31 (officially opened on June 2, 2008 and named J. N. Andrews Blvd.), Two endowed chairs: one for the Marketing Department in the School of Business Administration and the second in the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary's Christian Ministry Department, Construction of a milking parlor for the Andrews Dairy, Refurbish the kitchen and dining facilities in the Campus Center, and Support for the educational program of the Aeronautics Department.

Question: Which University is all around better? Southern Adventist University(TN) or Andrews University(MI)?

Best Answer

There's "better" and then there's "better." Andrews is cheaper. It offers degrees to a higher level, which usually means more of the faculty have such degrees. Still, as universities go, it's not very demanding academically, with relatively low test scores acceptable for admission. Southern Adventist is far less selective, its test scores even lower. It costs more per year, and doesn't grant doctoral degrees. Of the two, this is the poorer choice if all you look at is academics. That said, remember two things. First, a good school for you is one where you fit in and get what you need from both the educational and social aspects. If you're among people like yourself, you'll be happier, work harder, make friends, etc. Second, a motivated student who works hard, exceeding course requirements because she can, can get a good education at even the most lackluster school. My sister did this at what was then the worst college in Texas.
