Western Oregon University
From Wikipedia, The Free EncyclopediaWestern Oregon University (WOU) is a public liberal arts college located in Monmouth, Oregon, United States. Originally established in 1856 by Oregon pioneers as Monmouth University, a private college, and later merged with another private institution, Bethel College, to become Christian College. It became a state college called Oregon State Normal School in 1882. Subsequent names include Oregon Normal School, Oregon College of Education, and Western Oregon State College.
Western Oregon University incorporates both the College of Education and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Enrollment is approximately 5,000 students.
History
In the early 1850s, a group of pioneers crossed the Oregon Trail upon arrival they founded a church and school in the Willamette Valley. Monmouth University opened in 1856 with a small number of students. This small step led to development from a private institution through an era as a prominent teacher preparation school to today’s diverse liberal arts university.
Through the years, WOU has undergone seven name changes. In 1865, it merged with another private institution in Bethel and became Christian College. In 1882, the Oregon Legislature approved the college's bid to become a state-supported teacher training (or "normal") school, Oregon State Normal School, later named Oregon Normal School.
A period of growth in the 1920s more than tripled the school's enrollment to nearly 1,000 students. In 1939, the Oregon Legislature again changed the name to Oregon College of Education. The school entered an extended period of growth, except for a period during World War II when college enrollments dropped nationwide. The college's teacher education programs brought the school national recognition, and to compliment this growth new programs were added in the areas of liberal arts and sciences.
By 1981, it was renamed Western Oregon State College to reflect the schools growing academic programs in the liberal arts fields.

Question: How are my chances at law school? This ismy story, I am a sophomore at western Oregon university, I have a 3.36 GPA, and I decided this term that I want to dedicate myself to getting into law school. I have about six terms left and then I will start taking the LSATS. I know I can get my gpa up to at least 3.6 maybe even higher. My major is sociology and my minor is legal studies....what are your thoughts on my chances and what should I do to better prepare myself?8 months ago
Best AnswerLaw school admissions committees take a number of factors into consideration, including the competitiveness of your undergrad institution (and thus, whether your GPA is inflated or not); LSAT score; faculty recommendations; essay; and whether you might bring some diversity to the school (whether it's racial, socioeconomic, or even geographic diversity). For what it's worth, I had under a 3.6 undergrad GPA from UCLA but still got into a top 10 law school. I think my LSAT score, my faculty references, and my extensive leadership and extracurricular experience helped offset/overshadow the lower GPA. So don't rule out those other factors! Good luck! |
Question: College decision?I can't decide where to go to college. Western Oregon Seattle University University of Portland\ I'm paying for college on my own so money is a huge issue. Seattle gave me the most money but WOU is still the cheapest. Should I live at home and go to University of Portland or are the dorms a huge experience that just can't be missed? Any help?21 months ago
Best AnswerIf Seattle is still more expensive after you take into account the money they gave you then go to WOU. Dorms are a big part, however, you can live in the dorms even if you are from the area I think. Just live in the dorms the first year to make a bunch of friends, and then live at home and save a ton of money! This answer is based solely on money being a top priority and I didn't take into account all the fun that Seattle has to offer over portland. |
Question: Can you help my find studios/apartments?Is there a search engine or and easy way to find studio apartments or just apartments near western oregon university?27 months ago
Best AnswerGo to "MyNewPlace.com" - You tell them what you're looking for, where, how much you're looking to pay, they will show you available apartments according to the specifications you give them. If you don't like that batch, you can change your details and get more. There are pictures of the properties, floor plans, rents, everything you want to know about the apartment and the community. If you wind up moving into one of the "participating" apartments, you could get a check for $125 just by telling the apartment leasing agent you found the apartment on this site. Good luck... |
