Westminster College - Fulton School Description

Founded in 1851, Westminster College is a private, selective, coeducational, residential, undergraduate college with a curriculum based on the liberal arts with an emphasis on developmental experience. The College is dedicated to teaching excellence and an education centered on key values (integrity, fairness, respect, and responsibility) that prepares their graduates to become leaders of character. The student enrollment is over 800, and the student/faculty ratio is 16:1.

Students can choose from 36 majors, 34 minors and 12 pre-professional programs at Westminster College. However they can also choose to design their own course of study, tailoring a major or minor to their specific interests and goals. Nearly 15% of Westminster graduates will do a self-designed major or minor. It makes their studies more meaningful. It makes their studies...less like studies.

We are a close caring community in which faculty and students actively engage in learning. Small classes, student-center instruction, and the intentional integration of theoretical concepts and practical applications characterize our approach to education.

Imagine a semester abroad in England or a biology travel course in Africa. Picture yourself on an internship in the nation's capital or conducting scientific research in Taiwan. Envision service in the local community being integrated with courses in the curriculum. Dream about going home with a fellow student during the summer to the Maldives, or to Russia, or to India. It all happens here at Westminster College.

Westminster College encompasses 86 acres and is one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States. The Wallace H. Coulter Science Center, an award winning state of the art academic building includes 80,000 square feet of high tech teaching space, individualized research facilities and personalized learning areas. Fulton, nestled near the Mark Twain National Forest, is a friendly community over 13,000 people. A charming, cobble-stoned downtown offers shopping and dining. Residents and students alike enjoy the nearby Lake of the Ozarks with its opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing and other recreational activities.

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Westminster College is a private, selective, liberal arts institution in Fulton, Missouri, USA. It was founded by Presbyterians in 1849 as Fulton College and assumed the present name in 1851. The Winston Churchill Memorial and Library are located on the campus. The Churchill Memorial is a national historic site and includes the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury. The church, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1667, was rebuilt on the campus to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill, who made his famous "Iron Curtain" speech at Westminster College in 1946. As a bookend to history, Mikhail Gorbachev gave a speech in 1992, declaring the end of the Cold War.

The year previous to Gorbachev's historic visit, former President Ronald Reagan delivered a speech with a major section of the Berlin Wall, which now stands as a permanent monument on the College Quad, as a backdrop. The monument, named "Breakthrough" was designed by Winston Churchill's granddaughter, Edwina Sandys. See photo below for a visual of the Church, Library, and Berlin Wall monument.

College Advice on Westminster College - Fulton

Question: Anybody know anything about Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri?

I plan on attending Westminster College starting in the fall of this year. Doing a little research about the origins and history of the school, I came across quite a few interesting tidbits that left me at a standstill for answers. Coming across their National Register of Historic Places Nomination papers caused me to wonder even more. Upon researching the facts that I found in this, hardly anything came up. Hopefully someone here knows something to solve any of my many questions. First, why are there tunnels under the steam heating plant?? The only thing I found pertaining to this was that the Skulls of Seven met under these tunnels. Second, what is the history of the Skulls of Seven. The only thing I could find on them was on the school website, and that didn't really say much. Third, the Columns are obviously one of Westminster's joys. They serve as a memorial to the original Westminster Hall which burnt down in 1909. Nothing came up when I tried to research this fire. What caused this fire?? Now, why did Winston Churchill give his famous "Iron Curtain" speech here?? Finally, does anybody know of anything interesting that has happened at this college or in Fulton?? Thank you so very much!!! Any perspective would be great!

Hi Chelsea, Greetings from Westminster College! I am so excited to hear that you will be joining our campus community in the fall. Now on to all of your questions.... When the College was built many years ago the original buildings were heated by steam which was produced in the pipes that run through the tunnels. To answer your history questions I am using my copy of William E. Parrish's "Westminster College An Informal History, 1851-1999". In the fall of 1898, the Skulls of Seven were established to strengthen social ties among the fraternities. (Westminster was an all male school until 1979.) Eventually, the Skulls took charge of the traditions and ceremonies that happen on campus. The Skulls of Seven continue to maintain the history and traditions of the College. They are considered the most prestigious organization to be associated with on campus. You will have the chance to interact with the Skulls of Seven at the Columns Ceremony and New Student Convocation during Move in Weekend in August. The original Westminster Hall burned as a result of a fire that started in the Westminster Chapel which was next door. The thought is that the fire was caused by defective wiring in the Chapel attic. It was Westminster College President, Bullet McCluer, who had the idea to invite Winston Churchill to speak on campus. He sent an invitation to Winston Churchill by way of Major General Harry Vaughan (a WC alum) then on to President Harry Truman. President Truman forwarded the invitation to Winston Churchill with a note at the bottom that said "This is a wonderful school in my home state. Hope you can do it. I'll introduce you.". The rest is history. In addition to the Churchill's speech, many interesting things have happened at Westminster College over the years. Check out our website for the list of impressive people who have come to campus to speak. http://www.westminster-mo.edu/news/lecture/Pages/default.aspx You might enjoy a copy of Dr Parrish's book which is available at the Westminster College Bookstore. Please feel free to contact me with any other questions. Winston Blue Jay
