I want to major in Vocal Performance, transfering from a local college. I wanted to go to Michigan State, but it's too far. In my area there is either U of M, Wayne State, or Oakland University. U of M is out of my league and price range, and I am not a fan of OU. Thanks for your help!

Question:
Wayne State University?
Can someone tell me some information about the school. Do you like it? I heard it is a commuter campus, and if I go there I would not feel comfortable because I would be from a different state. Um also my parents say the crime in Detroit is horrible and don't want me to go. Give me your experience please.
tell me why u had a good experience there

Yep went there for 5 years.
Yes it is a commuter school. Also the majority of the students are part-time students because they are working full time or have family. The average age of a student doing their undergraduate degree is early 30s.
The campus is VERY safe and it being in Detroit has no impact. There are campus police everywhere and stats show that University of Michigan is actually more dangerous than WSU.
In terms of the classes, a lot of the courses (depending on what College you are in) are taught by graduate students and part-time faculty.
Overall, I had a positive experience with WSU mainly because I never ran into problems registering for classes and the Gen Ed requirements were easy/interesting.
If you want to know anything else, add details to your question and I'll revise my answer.- GOOD LUCK-

Hey,
I am from Michigan, and I plan on attending WSU also!!!!
But you might have to re-take and pass the classes you failed, because usually a (C) is required to transfer ANY college course. Alot of times schools don't even accept a (C-), But as long as you have a pretty good GPA then you should be fine!
GOOD LUCK (Future Warrior)

it is a good school. the campus is downtown Detroit. I don't recommend living on campus or in the area of the school.
here is the link for Wayne State.
If you can not afford this school try Oakland University or Henry Ford Community College or,eastern Michigan, or Grand Valley state.
the choices are endless for colleges in Michigan,,

I am applying to colleges and I need to make checks payable to whom? Like I'm applying for Wayne State University, St. Thomas Aquinas College..what do I write on the check?

Your safest bet is to call the admissions office and it's their job to assist you with questions.
My guess is you'll be safe just writting the college name on the check.

"For the academic year 2006-07, tuition will increase 5.8%. The new tuition rates amount to an increase in the per-credit-hour rate for Michigan resident freshmen and sophomores from $189.40 to $200.40. For resident juniors, seniors and post-bachelor’s, tuition will increase from $223.30 to $236.30 and graduate students from $337.60 to $357.20.
The tuition increase will go to support high-quality academic and research programs, provide additional funding for financial aid, meet inflationary increases in salaries, utilities and other non-discretionary expenses."
For a full-time student taking 12 hours that comes out to $2404.80 per semester. This does not include fees or room and board.

For admissions to Wayne State if you have lower than a 2.75 GPA (it has to be higher than 2.0 though!) you must have at least a 21 on the ACT. So right now I would say you are at the bottom of the pool. If you have some great letters of recommendation, a great essay, and have shown leadership in extra curriculars, that will help your chances of getting in (to any college/university). If you can't qualify to get in this year, you can always attend a community college for a year to give yourself a higher GPA and reapply next year. Study for the ACT... a higher score will increase your chances! Best of luck!
