Cazenovia College From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Cazenovia College is a private, two-year and four-year, residential liberal arts college located in the Village of Cazenovia in Madison County, New York. It enrolls approximately 800 students in associate & baccalaureate programs.

The college was founded in 1824 as the Seminary of the Genesee Conference; while founded by Methodists, the seminary was nonsectarian. It admitted women as well as men, and counted among its early graduates Leland Stanford.

Methodist sponsorship was withdrawn in 1942 when the seminary opened a women's college, Cazenovia Junior College. After the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools accredited the institution in 1961 it was renamed Cazenovia College for Women, and again to Cazenovia College in 1982 after it became coeducational.

I taught at Cazenovia College many years ago when I was a graduate student. It is a very small college in a very nice little village about 20 miles outside of Syracuse. They have an excellent riding program, if you're into equestrian events. They are very aware of learning disabilities, and have good support systems for LD students. The professors are quite good, and most are very caring. Class sizes are very small, and one-on-one attention is the norm. Everyone knows everyone. On the other hand, the college is not very selective (almost anyone can get in), and therefore the academics are not terribly rigorous. The library is minuscule. You may have to use interlibrary loan a lot for basic research materials. However, Caz students do have access to the libraries at Syracuse U, as well as Lemoyne College. Going to these libraries is often a better plan than using interlibrary loan. Students drive to Syracuse regularly, for library access, cultural events, shopping, and entertainment. Caz does not require SATs or ACTs, but does recommend them, so most applicants submit them. The average SAT scores last year were: SAT Critical Reading: 430 - 540 SAT Math: 420 - 530 SAT Writing: This part is new, so no figures are available yet, but the average will probably be in the same range as the reading and math scores. The average ACT Composite score was between 18 and 23.
