The University of Georgia, a land-grant and sea-grant university with state-wide commitments and responsibilities, is the state's flagship institution of higher education. It is also the state's oldest, most comprehensive and most diversified institution of higher education. Its motto, "to teach, to serve and to inquire into the nature of things," reflects the university's integral and unique role in the conservation and enhancement of the state's and nation's intellectual, cultural and environmental heritage.
UGA shares with the other research universities of the University System of Georgia the following core characteristics:
1. a statewide responsibility and commitment to excellence and academic achievements having national and international recognition;
2. a commitment to excellence in a teaching/learning environment dedicated to serve a diverse and well-prepared student body, to promote high levels of student achievement and to provide appropriate academic support services;
3. a commitment to excellence in research, scholarship and creative endeavors that are focused on organized programs to create, maintain and apply new knowledge and theories; that promote instructional quality and effectiveness; and that enhance institutionally relevant faculty qualifications;
4. a commitment to excellence in public service, economic development, and technical assistance activities designed to address the strategic needs of the state of Georgia along with a comprehensive offering of continuing education designed to meet the needs of Georgia's citizens in life-long learning and professional education;
5. a wide range of academic and professional programming at the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral levels.
With its statewide mission and core characteristics, UGA endeavors to prepare the university community and the state for full participation in the global society of the twenty- first century. Through its programs and practices, it seeks to foster the understanding of and respect for cultural differences necessary for an enlightened and educated citizenry. It further provides for cultural, ethnic, gender and racial diversity in the faculty, staff and student body. The university is committed to preparing the university community to appreciate the critical importance of a quality environment to an interdependent global society.
As a comprehensive land-grant and sea-grant institution, UGA offers baccalaureate, master's, doctoral and professional degrees in the arts, humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, business, environmental design, family and consumer sciences, forest resources, journalism and mass communication, education, law, pharmacy, social work and veterinary medicine.
The university attracts students nationally and internationally as well as from within Georgia. It offers the state's broadest array of possibilities in graduate and professional education, and thus a large minority of the student body is post-baccalaureate. The predominantly Georgian undergraduate student body is a mix of highly qualified students originally admitted as freshmen and selected transfer students principally from other University System institutions.
With original scholarship, basic and applied research, and creative activities constituting an essential core from which to draw, the impact of the land-grant and sea-grant mission is reflected throughout the state. Cooperative extension, continuing education, public service, experiment stations and technology transfer are all designed to enhance the well-being of the citizens of Georgia through their roles in economic, social, and community development.
As it has been historically, UGA is responsive to the evolution of the state's educational, social and economic needs. It aspires through its strategic planning to even closer contact and interaction with public and private institutions throughout the state as well as with the citizens it serves.
The University of Georgia (UGA) is a public research university located in Athens, Georgia, the oldest and largest of the state's institutions of higher learning. Founded in 1785, it was the first state-chartered university in the United States.

As a college town, Athens often ranks as the top in America. On campus, students enjoy a successful athletics program, an acclaimed student newspaper, and a strong Greek system. The university also hosts the prestigious Peabody Awards.

It is a very good school -- better than most state universities -- even though it is only the second best public university in Georgia (GA Tech is better). Their B-School is also excellent on the undergraduate level.

I slacked off my freshmen and sophomore year, but junior year I did really well. first semester I got a 3.71 with two AP classes and second semester I got a 3.85. I've taken the hardest classes available, also. My cummulative gpa is 3.349. not too good... but my SAT scores were a 1270 the first time and a 1310 the second time. I played varsity softball going on three years, and one year of jv soccer. I've been in a school musical, and have done lots of community service.
UGA is my number one school, but i'm not sure what my chances are. what do you think?

I live in Georgia, and I can tell you, UGA is a very unpredictable school as far as admissions are concerned. Most of my high school peers applied to UGA...only some got accepted. And the funny thing is that it wasn't the smartest kids who got accepted...most kids who got accepted didn't have as good of grades as those who were rejected.
On paper, your stuff looks great. The SAT scores could be better if you're really trying to be "perfect". But there's no telling with UGA.

I am currently a Sophomore in a Georgia highschool. My dream is getting into the University of Georgia. I live about 50 miles from the located campus. The only wall that maybe blocking me from attending the University of Georgia is my GPA... My current GPA is 3.5... I had a bad work ethic when I was a freshman. My grades are getting better. I have taken one AP course this year and recieved a non weighted B... I also take two other gifted classes. Next year I plan on taking three AP courses and also doing Joint Enrollment my senior year. My extracurricular clubs are Beta Club, Interact Club, Science Club, Vice President for Student Council, Yearbook Staff and I also plan on maybe working. I was wondering if UGA looks at weighted GPAs or unweighted. And I am Indian idk if that helps me any. But if anyone could tell me my chances of getting in, I would greatly appreciate it.

As a graduate of Georgia Tech, the main rival of UGA, I should say NO, but in all honesty, I have to say YES. It is a good school for the fields for which it is known. That list does not include engineering, though. Choose your major field, then choose the schools.

Question:
What is University of Georgia like?
Can someone who currently attends UGA or who had visited UGA tell me what the student life is like? Is it too crowded? How are the dorms and the professors?
As you can see, I want to know anything and everything.
Thanks

I've visited Georgia University. The school isn't that great. They have ok-ay quality dorms and a nice food court. Many balconies and colums outside. Home of the Georgia Bulldogs. It's pretty crowded. It's big, I'd say. It's a nice tourist attraction on the holidays, and breaks. They have carpeted floors throughout the whole school except for the main lobby and the stairs. They have many little theatre rooms for middle and high school performances and programs.
I wouldn't say Georgia University is that great, but it's good. They have a nice gift shop. I got a little funny cup there... It has about 10 buildings in total. I can tell you more in e-mail. I hope what I've said so far helps. You can find my e-mail address and more by click on my avatar!

Question:
Anybody go to the University of Georgia? Is it a good college? What GPA and stuff do u need?
Is it hard to get into if your applying out of state?

I didn't end up going there, but I did apply and get accepted. The campus is pretty, sort of out in the middle of nowhere. It's a decent college, it has name recognition. If you're into football, you'll like it because southern football is intense. GPA is hard to judge, when I applied, I had a 3.3. If you don't live in the southeast, it's easier to get in so they have more diversity. If you're a minority, women in science, or going for a difficult major, you also have a better chance of getting in.
I would definitely go visit first though to make sure you like the area and the southern culture. It's a little different, for me at least, considering I'm from the Northeast.

Question:
University of Georgia, Athens?
How much a party school is the University of Georgia? And is Athens a real party school town? I'm looking into colleges and I don't want an unsafe campus/town b/c of all of the drinking. I've ruled out the University of Florida b/c of it. Any information will be appreciated.

Like most schools with large populations, UGA is a party school. But on the other hand, they are a great school with high rankings many several different fields. Also they have 24 hour campus surveillance and many other safety tactics to insure safety.

I think credibility wise they are pretty much equal, but as to where would be better to go- Georgia.
Pretty weather, pretty people, pretty place. Inidana is cold, snowy (think Midwest weather). Also, Georgia is growing crazy fast so you would be more likely to find a job, their market is expanding so quickly.
good luck!
