Norfolk State University (NSU) is a four-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts, historically black university located in Norfolk, Virginia. It is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and the Virginia High-Tech Partnership.
The institution was founded in 1935 as the Norfolk State Unit of Virginia Union University (VUU). Eighty-five students attended the first classes held in 1935. In 1942, the school became independent of VUU and was named Norfolk Polytechnic College. Within two years, by an act of the Virginia Legislature, it became a part of Virginia State College (now Virginia State University). In 1956 Norfolk State College granted its first bachelor's degrees.
In 1969 the college divided from Virginia State College and was named Norfolk State College. When the college was granted university status in 1979, it changed its name to Norfolk State University.
Norfolk State offers 2 Doctorate and 15 Master's degrees, including Master's degree programs in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, and Criminal Justice. The school also offers 36 undergraduate degrees, with a new degree being offered in Optical Engineering.
Norfolk State's undergraduate and graduate programs are divided into six Colleges.

Question:
Norfolk State University?
I am a college freshman trying to find a good university with a nursing program in the Norfolk, Virginia area.. I was researching NSU and apparently it is a mostly african american school and is on all these lists for top black schools. I'm white. Will I be the only white one there, should I even apply??
Also I need a school that offers an associate degree in nursing which I don't think William & Mary or Old Dominion offers..
ps im a tiny white blonde girl. now should i be scared? lol

No, you will not be the only white person at the school. Yes, apply. As a white student, you may even qualify for a scholarship.
NSU and Old Dominion University (ODU), which is predominantly white, have an agreement in place and you can take courses at both schools. There are some neighborhoods in the area that are a little rough near both schools. You just need to be careful.
The area has some great hospitals, so if you decide to stay, you will not be lacking in job offers. I work downtown Norfolk for the last nine years and love the area.
