School Description
Provided by The Southern Baptist Theological SeminaryUnder the lordship of Jesus Christ, the mission of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is to be totally committed to the Bible as the Word of God and to be a servant of the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention by training, educating, and preparing ministers of the gospel for more faithful service.
At Southern Seminary, truth is our foundation for learning and our legacy runs deep. Each year, thousands of students see their vision come alive while fulfilling their ministry calling with us.
We believe that we are living in serious times and we are looking for students who are serious about impacting our world with the gospel of Christ.
Southern Seminary is in many ways like a theological university. We have an outstanding undergraduate school, Boyce College, which is joined by three premier graduate level schools that make up the Seminary. These schools are: The School of Theology, The Billy Graham School of Missions and Evangelism, and The School of Church Ministries.
The programs of the seminary focus on the development of ministerial competencies at the pre-baccalaureate, baccalaureate, professional post-baccalaureate, professional doctoral, and research doctoral levels. The seminary also provides services to persons, churches, and denominational entities through its programs of continuing education for ministry.
Degrees are offered on four different educational levels. These degrees and programs include: the Diploma Program, Master’s Degrees (M.A., M.C.M., M.M.C.M., and M.Div.), Professional Doctoral Degrees (D.Min., D.M.M, D.Miss., and D.Ed.Min.) and Research Doctoral Degrees (Th.M., D.M.A., and Ph.D.). Boyce College (the undergraduate school of the seminary) offers an associate degree and two baccalaureate degrees.
The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
From Wikipedia, The Free EncyclopediaThe Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is located in Louisville, Kentucky and is the flagship seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention, or SBC. Southern Seminary or SBTS is the oldest of the seminaries in the SBC and was founded in 1859 by John A. Broadus, Basil Manly, Jr., William Williams, and James Petigru Boyce who served as its first president. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. is the seminary's ninth and current president, holding the title since 1993. Southern Seminary upholds the SBC Baptist Faith and Message and its own Abstract of Principles.
Methodology
Southern Baptist Theological Seminary primarily practices "evangelical" apologetic religious training combined with practical ministerial experience. In this method, students are taught about Baptist theology and other religions so that future ministers, missionaries, and church workers can most effectively communicate and defend their faith to non-Christians. This method of teaching involves evaluating, with a purpose in validating, the Christian Bible to be the inspired word of the Christian God and infallible. This understanding of religious education also differs from the critical method of religious training, which is commonly taught in many modern seminaries and universities.
History and academics
According to the Southern Baptist Convention, the Seminary has been an innovator in theological education since its founding in 1859 at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina as the first seminary of the SBC. The school's pioneering legacy began in the visionary mind of James Petigru Boyce, the school's first president. Boyce dreamed of a school that would accept all God-called individuals for study regardless of their educational background.
Though it prospered in its early years, the end of the Civil War found the seminary holding worthless Confederate war bonds, located in newly impoverished South Carolina during Reconstruction. With the financial help of Baptist John D. Rockefeller and a group of Louisville business leaders who promised to underwrite the construction of a new campus, the seminary relocated to Louisville in 1877.

Question: Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, KY or Southeastern Batist...NC?Which is a better seminary academically? I am looking for a good MDiv program in biblical studies and I am narrowing it down to these two.38 months ago
Best AnswerI would suggest Southern Baptist Theological Seminary because they are more widely known. However, I do want to advice you against getting an MDiv. You don't know what will happen a few years from now and if you'll want to do church work anymore. Not saying that you'll lose your faith, but you might want to get into management or something. An Masters in Divinity will not open you any more doors. If you already have a Bachelors in Bible Studies, the best thing to do is get a Masters in Speech Communication. |
