School Description

Provided by Washington Adventist University

Columbia Union College has officially announced it is changing its name to Washington Adventist University.

A unique vision shapes the character of an institution and makes it particularly appealing to students.

Columbia Union Colleges is a small private college near the nation’s capital with deeply-felt Christian roots. As a result, the college displays excellence in terms of its own distinctiveness, with an emphasis on classes that are smaller and taught by professors who bring not only the kind of technical capability you would expect at a college at the nation’s capital, but also a strong sense of mission. This translates into a more personal style of teaching, where students are not lost in the shuffle, as is possible in larger institutions.

Also, because we are located at the nation’s capital, our classes take on a distinctive excitement due to the resources available. For example, where in another part of the country a class might talk about a Supreme Court decision, our students can visit the Court and listen to the testimony and watch history being made. Where in another part of the country a class might study about a foreign culture, our students can actually hop on the Metro and go down and visit the embassy.

The fact that we’re a Christian college with a distinctive emphasis on service (our motto is "Gateway to Service") means that students also have opportunities, here, to explore their own spiritual journey in ways that are wholly supportive. We believe this adds value to the college experience that is transformational in its nature.

From our park-like campus located just miles from the center of Washington, D.C., students take advantage of the nation's capital every day – not only as a place of historical interest, but as a workplace, classroom and playground. Study journalism and intern at The Washington Post, CNN or the Discovery Channel. Study pre-law and intern at a powerful D.C. law firm or on Capitol Hill. Study business and intern at the World Bank. The possibilities are endless. Washington Adventist University graduates can move on to the next stage of life with an outstanding resumé.

Washington Adventist University in Maryland allows you to explore the world around you through a wide variety of majors and a faculty that takes time to listen. We also allow you to immerse yourself in a dynamic spiritual environment with a focus on service. Add to that world-class musical performance organizations like the New England Youth Ensemble, which is performing over 20 times this year at Carnegie Hall, and you have a powerful choice for excellent, adventurous students who want to make a difference in the world.

And there's no shortage of activity on the Washington Adventist University campus. We boast the denomination's only NCAA Division II athletics program and Mock Trial team. For off-campus adventure, over 200 miles of hiking trails begin at the edge of our campus. Some even lead to the monuments on the National Mall. WGTS, our campus radio station, is the third-largest Christian radio station in the U.S.

History

Established in 1904 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Columbia Union College is open to people of all faiths and includes community service as part of its curriculum. The school was once known as Washington Missionary College.

The current president of the college is Dr. Weymouth Spence, who has announced plans for structural changes to revitalize the school. The changes are described in detail in a document called The Plan. President Spence succeeded Dr. Randal Wisbey, who left in 2007 to become the president of sister institution, La Sierra University. The resident agent is The Corporation Trust, Inc., in Baltimore, MD.
