Alice Lloyd College
100 Purpose Rd, Pippa Passes, KY 41844
School Description
Provided by Alice Lloyd CollegeAlice Lloyd College, a private coeducational senior institution with a required self-help student work program, will provide high quality educational opportunities primarily for students with outstanding leadership potential for effective service to the surrounding mountain region, regardless of the students' ability to pay. The College, with its dedicated personnel who have a passion for excellence, a zeal for continual personal and professional improvement, a caring attitutde toward students, and a desire to work with trustees and other friends in developing an institution directed and sustained by Christian principles, will be one of the most distinctive liberal arts institutions in the Appalachian region.
Rich in tradition and clear in mission, Alice Lloyd College is widely recognized as a highly respected, private, four-year, liberal arts institution dedicated to providing leadership education to some of the brightest and best students in the Appalachian region.
Alice Lloyd College's campus is unique among institutions of higher learning. It occupies land on both sides of the usually quiet flowing Caney Creek. Steep wooded mountains rise from the Creek, and much of the 175-acre campus rambles along the slopes with many buildings actually set into hillsides. The total effect is a naturally beautiful campus in the heart of Appalachia. Pippa Passes Kentucky
Alice Lloyd College lies in a quaint mountain community in eastern Kentucky with the enchanting name of Pippa Passes. Pippa Passes is located about 140 miles east of Lexington, Kentucky, and 120 miles southwest of Huntington, West Virginia. But it is closer to Hazard, Prestonsburg, Hindman, Mousie, Possum Trot and Onion Blade.
Alice Lloyd College
From Wikipedia, The Free EncyclopediaAlice Lloyd College is a four-year liberal arts work college in Pippa Passes, Kentucky. It was co-founded by the Cambridge, Massachusetts-born journalist Alice Spencer Geddes Lloyd and New York native June Buchanan in 1923, initially under the name Caney Junior College, as an institution which would educate leaders for Appalachia locally. It became a four-year, bachelor's degree-granting institution in the early 1980s. Alice Lloyd College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
While Alice Lloyd College does not rely on any direct financial support from the state or federal governments, they do accept federal and state student financial aid such as federal Pell Grants. Students are required to work in a work study program regardless of financial situation. They are given jobs such as janitorial staff, office assistant, tutor, craft maker, resident advisor, maintenance, grounds or working in the cafeteria (Hunger Din). Students are required to work 10 hours a week, with the exception of student supervisors who work 20 hours a week, for minimum wage. The College is one of eight work colleges in the United States and one of two in Kentucky (Berea College being the other) which have mandatory work study programs.
Student life
Alice Lloyd College requires students to live in gender-separated dormitories and only allows the opposite sex into a gender-specific dorm during "open houses", after room checks are made. Room checks consist of two resident advisors (RA's) going into each individual room and making sure it is clean and does not contain any illegal substances. The college is located in Knott County, Kentucky, a dry county, thus alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
Tuesdays are professional dress days where students are required by instructors, except for physical education classes housed in the Grady Nutt Athletic Center, to dress in business attire to attend any class before 2pm.
