Canisius College is a private Catholic college in the Delaware Park district of north-central Buffalo, New York. It was founded in 1870 by members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). It is named for St. Peter Canisius, a Dutch Jesuit of the 16th century, who spent his active life as an apostle to post-Reformation Germany. As of 2007, Canisius has 3,468 undergraduates and 1,389 graduate students. The freshman class of 2010 currently contains 755 students. The 58-acre campus houses 37 buildings. The school is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.
Canisius College consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Wehle School of Business, and the School of Education and Human Services.
In recent years Canisius has made a huge investment to improve every part of the campus. Over $117 million has been spent in improvements in almost every building on campus. In the fall of 2007, Canisius College President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., announced the college’s plans to raise $90 million by the year 2010 for capital improvements and to enhance the college’s endowment. A Legacy of Leadership: The Campaign for Canisius College is the largest fund-raising initiative in the college’s 137-year history. Of the $90 million goal, $47 million will fund the creation of an interdisciplinary science center at the college in the former HealthNow building and parking pavilion at 1901 Main Street in the heart of the campus. The science center will enhance the college’s position as one of the nation’s top undergraduate universities for science education.
U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks Canisius as 22nd among regional schools in its "North Region." Canisius was included in Kaplan's list of "America's 367 Most Interesting Schools."
Canisius is home to more than 70 majors, minors and special programs through the College of Arts & Sciences, the Richard J. Wehle School of Business, and the School of Education and Human Services. Canisius is accredited by the Middle States Association Commission on Higher Education, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Some of the most prominent programs at the college are; Accounting, Finance, Biology, Chemistry, and Education. Biology and Chemistry majors at Canisius in the past five years have had high acceptance rates into the graduate school of their choice. The Canisius accounting program consistently ranks among the top programs in New York State and the U.S. based on student pass rates on the CPA exam according to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. The finance program at Canisius has The Golden Griffin Fund which requires students to research, create, and manage portfolio holdings (stocks); analyze and recommend companies to add to the portfolio; and grow the fund through the solicitation of new investors. The fund started in 2003 with $100,000.
