United States Military Academy at West Point School Description

Our mission is to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country; professional growth throughout a career as an officer in the United States Army; and a lifetime of selfless service to the nation.

Renowned as the world’s premier leader development institution, West Point accomplishes its mission by developing cadets intellectually, physically, militarily, ethically, spiritually, and socially. The student body, or Corps of Cadets, numbers 4,400 and each year approximately 1000 cadets join the Long Gray Line as they graduate and are commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the U.S. Army.

The Academic Program consists of 31 core courses which establishes the foundation for elective courses that permit cadets to explore in greater depth a field of study or an optional major. All cadets receive a Bachelor of Science degree, and are fully prepared meet the intellectual requirements of a leader in today's Army.

The Physical Program at West Point includes both physical education classes and competitive athletics. Every cadet participates in an intercollegiate, club or intramural level sport each semester. This rigorous physical program contributes to mental and physical fitness.

The Military Program begins on your first day at West Point. Most military training takes place during the summer, with new cadets undergoing Cadet Basic Training - or Beast Barracks - the first year, followed by Cadet Field Training at nearby Camp Buckner the second year. Cadets spend their third and fourth summers serving in active Army units around the world; attending advanced training courses such as airborne, air assault or northern warfare; or training the first and second year cadets as members of the leadership cadre.

Ethical, Spiritual, and Social development occurs formally and informally throughout your 47 months as a cadet. These include formal instruction in the important values of the military profession, voluntary religious programs, interaction with staff and faculty role models, and a vigorous guest speaker program. Cadets also develop ethically by adhering to the Cadet Honor Code, which states "A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do."

The life of a cadet is demanding, but West Point has the most robust extracurricular activity program in the nation. In fact, the Princeton Review ranked West Point #3 in the nation in the category “More to Do on Campus.” On-campus facilities include a ski slope, skating rink, and golf course. Clubs include DJ club, orienteering, rock climbing, and Big Brother-Big Sister. Cadets also get opportunities such as singing backup for Billy Joel as 12 cadets did at his last concerts at Shea Stadium, and holding the American flag and staying for the game as 75 cadets did at the final Major League Baseball All-Star game at Yankee Stadium.

The Academy is located approximately 50 miles north of New York City on the Hudson River. The campus and central post area comprise only a small portion of the nearly 16,000 acre reservation.

United States Military Academy at West Point

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

The United States Military Academy at West Point (also known as USMA, West Point, or Army) is a four year coeducational federal service academy located at West Point, New York. Established in 1802, USMA is the oldest of the United States' five service academies. The military garrison at West Point was occupied in 1778 and played a key role in the Revolutionary War. The academy sits on scenic high ground overlooking the Hudson River, north of New York City. The entire central campus is a national landmark and home to scores of historic sites, buildings, and monuments. The majority of the campus's neogothic buildings are constructed from gray and black granite. The campus is a popular tourist destination complete with a large visitor center and the oldest museum in the United States Army.

Candidates for admission must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a congressman. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as cadets. Tuition for cadets is fully funded by the Army in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,000 cadets graduate each spring and are commissioned as second lieutenants. The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades cadets' performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Cadets are required to adhere to the Cadet Honor Code, which states that "a cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do".

Because of the academy's age and unique mission, its traditions influenced other institutions. It was the first American college to have class rings, and its technical curriculum was a model for later engineering schools. West Point's student body has a unique rank structure and lexicon. All cadets reside on campus and dine together en masse on weekdays for breakfast and lunch. The academy fields fifteen men's and nine women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sports teams while every student competes in at least one sport, either at intramural or intercollegiate level, each semester. The football team was a national power in the early 20th century, winning three national championships. Its alumni are collectively referred to as "The Long Gray Line" and its ranks include two Presidents of the United States, numerous famous generals, and seventy-four Medal of Honor recipients.

Question: Can I apply to the US Military AND Naval Academy?

Will senators be able to nominate me for two academies and would it affect my chances of getting admitted?

Best Answer

I assume that you are asking about applying to West Point and Annapolis simoultaneously. If you can get letters from your senator fro both, I believe you absolutely can apply to both at the same time. It is similiar to applying to Harvard and Yale at the same time. Ask your Sentator's district representative to have the letter state that he recommends you for both, or that you need two separate letters. Remember, they usually only recommend a few per year. So good luck.

Question: Who founded the United States Military Academy at West Point?

a)Thomas Jefferson,b)John Pershing,c)William Sherman,d)George Patton.

Best Answer

Thomas Jefferson established West Point on March 16, 1802 According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Point#History "West Point was first a military post under the command of Benedict Arnold. Established in 1802, it is the oldest military academy in the United States." "The site was selected for the construction of a fort by George Washington, and the fortifications were designed in 1778 by Tadeusz Ko?ciuszko" "George Washington quickly realized the need for a national military academy, but his Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson argued that there was no provision in the Constitution which allowed for the creation of a military academy. However, when Jefferson became president, he signed legislation establishing the United States Military Academy on March 16, 1802; the school opened on July 4 of the same year."
