School Description

Provided by Auburn University- Montgomery

Auburn University's mission is defined by its land-grant traditions of service and access. The University will serve the citizens of the State through its instructional, research and outreach programs and prepare Alabamians to respond successfully to the challenges of a global economy. The University will provide traditional and non-traditional students broad access to the institution's educational resources. In the delivery of educational programs on campus and beyond, the University will draw heavily upon the new instructional and outreach technologies available in the emerging information age.

At Auburn University at Montgomery, “our standard is excellence” is more than just a motto. It’s a way of life.

Selected in recent years by The Princeton Review as a “Best Business School,” “Best Value College,” and a “Best Southeastern College,” Auburn Montgomery’s five academic schools – Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences – all offer challenging undergraduate and graduate programs.

We offer the unique combination of a large university scope while still keeping the small school feel that keeps our students coming back. We offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees as well as programs of study in more than 90 areas. Plus, our classes are offered days, nights, weekends and online. But we've worked hard to keep our classes small and ensure that students receive personal attention. That's why we keep our student-faculty ratio at 16:1. It's what works best for our students.

With programs of study in more than 90 areas, Auburn Montgomery’s courses run the gamut from accounting to sociology. We have sororities and fraternities for those who want to go Greek and numerous active clubs and organizations. Plus, your destination is never more than a five-minute walk on campus.

Auburn Montgomery’s Storage Area Network Center of Excellence teaches information technology students to manage networks that store vast quantities of digital data. One of only six such centers in the country, it has been extremely successful in placing graduates in rewarding high-tech jobs with companies like Unisys.

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) is a coeducational public university located in Montgomery, Alabama, USA. It is a branch campus of Auburn University and was established by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1967. AUM offers programs of study leading to bachelor's, master's, and specialist degrees in business, education, liberal arts, nursing, and science. In addition, AUM offers doctorates in the three programs in conjunction with Auburn University. The university enrolls approximately 5,000 students, with an additional 10,000 enrolled in continuing education programs. In January 2007, the university moved toward branding itself as "Auburn Montgomery."

History

AUM originated from an extension center operated by the University of Alabama. The extension center was located on Bell Street between downtown Montgomery and Maxwell Air Force Base and began offering classes in 1936. In the mid-1960s, Montgomery civic leaders began making plans to convert the extension into a full four year degree-granting university. The University of Alabama expressed little desire to add another university to the University of Alabama System; therefore, Auburn University purchased the property from the University of Alabama and began operating AUM as a part of Auburn University.

AUM was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. In March 1968, Dr. H. Hanly Funderburk, Jr. was appointed vice president and chief administrator of the newly created university. Classes officially began in the fall of 1969 but remained at the Bell Street location until construction of the new campus was completed. In the fall of 1971, AUM moved into its new campus located seven miles (11 km) east of downtown Montgomery. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredited AUM as an operationally separate institution in 1973. Accreditation was reaffirmed in 1978, 1988, and 1998.
