University of Minnesota-Crookston From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) is a four-year university located in Crookston, Minnesota. With approximately 1,200 students, it is the smallest campus in the University of Minnesota system.

Located near Crookston, Minnesota, the 237-acre campus is situated in the Red River Valley, one of the richest and most diversified agricultural regions in the United States.

History

In 1895, the Minnesota legislature appropriated $30,000 to construct experimental research farms at Morris, Minnesota and Crookston, Minnesota. The Great Northern Railway, under the guidance of James J. Hill, donated 476 acres. The Northwest Experiment Station was established.

In 1905, the Minnesota legislature appropriated $15,000 to establish the Northwest School of Agriculture, a regional residential agricultural high school. The school provided training in "the technical and practical business of agriculture and in the art of homemaking." The school year began in October and ended in March to accommodate farm students. In 1906, the Northwest School of Agriculture (NWSA) officially opened.

In 1963, the University of Minnesota Bureau of Field Studies began examining the need for a two year institution of higher education at the NWSA and, in 1965, the University of Minnesota Technical Institute, a two-year (associate) degree granting institution, was formed.

In 1978, the name was changed to the University of Minnesota-Crookston (UMC). In 1993, the University of Minnesota-Crookston became a baccalaureate granting institution.

Campus

The 237-acre campus, located on the northern edge of the City of Crookston, includes flower gardens bordering a spacious mall and a natural history area that contains virgin prairie land. Facilities built within the last decade include a recently completed apartment style residential hall (2006), which houses 21 two-bedroom units that share a common kitchen and living room area. They are air-conditioned and have full-size refrigerators, microwaves and dishwashers. All apartments are fully furnished and have wired and wireless Internet access. Other new and/or updated buildings include the centrally located Student Center (completed 2005); renovated Kiehle Building (completed 2003), with an auditorium; an indoor animal science arena and equine stable; a recreational and athletic complex (new gym floor install 2007); a horticulture complex, including four crop production greenhouses; an environmental science facility; and an early childhood center.
