University of Maryland - Eastern Shore School Description

University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), the State’s Historically Black 1890 Land-Grant institution, emphasizes baccalaureate and graduate programs in the liberal arts, health professions, sciences, and teacher education. In keeping with its land-grant mandate, the University’s purpose and uniqueness are grounded in distinctive learning, discovery, and engagement opportunities in agriculture, marine and environmental sciences, technology, engineering and aviation sciences, health professions, and hospitality management. Degrees are offered at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels.

Since its beginning, the institution has had several name changes and governing bodies. It was Maryland State College from 1948 until 1970, when it became one of the five campuses that formed the University of Maryland. In 1988, it became a member of the then eleven campus (now thirteen) University of Maryland System, now known as the University System of Maryland . UMES is approved by the state of Maryland and fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Within the last decade, UMES has added 17 new degree-granting programs to its academic roster. Graduates of these programs often choose to remain on the Delmarva Peninsula, procuring careers in their areas of professional study, to benefit the region, particularly the Lower Eastern Shore. The prediction is that this local enrichment will continue as more students enroll in the University’s programs of business and economics, physical therapy, hotel and restaurant management, poultry technology and management, and computer science. Likewise the outlook is good for the sciences, agriculture, liberal arts and graduate programs.

The newest programs on the UMES campus also look toward current and future needs of the Eastern Shore. Airway Science, Law Enforcement and Rehabilitation services have all been recently added to the University’s offerings. Greater course offerings during evening and weekend hours have also been developed, allowing a greater segment of the local population to enhance themselves and their communities through post-secondary education.

The campus is located on 620 acres of land. There are approximately 3,300 students enrolled; 93 percent are undergraduates. Students have various backgrounds and come from thirty states and fifty-five other countries. Fifty-five percent of the students live in on-campus housing. All students may keep cars on campus.

UMES is located in the small town of Princess Anne on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The town dates back to 1733 and has many buildings and landmarks of historic interest. The quiet community environment is excellent for learning, yet it is only 3 hours by car from the abundant cultural and recreational facilities of Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Virginia Beach. The state's famous seaside resort, Ocean City, is only 1 hour from the campus. The campus is located 13 miles south of the town of Salisbury, which provides shopping and recreational facilities.

Athletics

UMES athletic teams compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The school was once a powerhouse in black college football, producing five undefeated seasons between 1947 and 1960, but like many smaller colleges, the high costs associated with operating a Division I football program and complying with Title IX became too much of a burden, and the team was shut down after the 1979 season. NFL player and coach Art Shell attended UMES.

UMES women's bowling team won the NCAA National Championship in 2008 in Omaha, Nebraska against Arkansas State University. They won the series 4-2 (in a best of 7 match). The team was led by All-Tournament players Jessica Worsley (who was named the tournament MVP) and Maria Rodriguez. The women's bowling team came in 2nd at the NCAA National Championship in 2007 (Orlando, Florida) who fell to Vanderbilt University in a 4-3 series. The team was led by All-Tournament players Marion Singleton and Jessica Worsley. UMES women's bowling team also won the MEAC Conference Championship in 2000, 2006, 2007, and 2008.

It's a very good HBCU, kind of expensive if you aren't an MD resident What are you planning on studying, it always depends on the major... idk who told you that wasn't a good school, it's not on the list of 'party schools' and is very well known
