Types of English Scholarships

Since English is already a popular major, you may not find quite as many financial aid opportunities as in fields like biology or engineering. However, there are still a number of scholarships out there.

Most English scholarships are school-specific, but you can also find some nationwide contests that provide financial aid awards. A handful of fellowships are also available for English majors.

Popular Scholarships for English Majors

Many of the school-specific scholarships offer amounts between $500 and $3,000, such as the Clara B. Small Scholarship at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, which offers $1,200 to a nontraditional student studying English.

There are also some national contests, such as the Joseph Henry Jackson Literary Award scholarship, which awards $2,000 to a student with an exceptional work of non-published fiction.

Fellowships range in requirements and awards. The Swann Foundation Fellowship is a particularly interesting one, offering $15,000 to a student with an outstanding thesis related to caricature or cartoon.

Applying for English Scholarships

Since English is a writing field, many English scholarships will require an essay or other written work for consideration. Some school-specific scholarships will award students based solely on their GPA and academic performance.

As an English major, you have a particular skill with words. Thus, you might find that you can apply for other scholarships that require an essay and aren't specific to a particular major and have a leg up on the competition.
