Sociology Scholarships

A love of research is key for those considering a sociology major, or career in sociology, as much of the work in the field is research on the various facets of society.

That doesn’t mean that sociology majors are limited to research, though, as the critical thinking skills gained through the study of sociology are applicable to many different fields.

Students may find that their research skills and ability to think on a large scale might help them find jobs in human resources, work with non-profits and community organizing, or find an administrative position in the public or private sector.

Types of Sociology Scholarships

Since the field is so heavily based in research, it’s no surprise that there are often a number of research fellowships available to those studying sociology. Most of these fellowships are for those about to complete their undergraduate studies.

There are also a number of school-specific sociology scholarships through schools like Clemson University or Florida Atlantic University.

Popular Sociology Scholarships

Those interested in population research (an important field considering the global population is past seven billion) should look into the Population Council Fellowship, which grants anywhere from $20,000 to $45,000 to those with research proposals.

Scholarships are mostly limited to specific schools, so be sure to check with your school to see if there are any available.

Applying for Sociology Scholarships

Fellowships for doctoral level study will often require a research proposal along with an application and personal statement. Scholarships usually require a minimum GPA, often anywhere between a 2.5 and a 3.5.
