University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) Scholarships

What began as a small center serving 100 students has grown into one of the largest public universities in Alabama. The University of Alabama at Birmingham now enrolls more than 17,500 students and employs more people than any other institution or business in the state.

While it’s certainly an exciting prospect to be a part of such a vast university, cost of tuition may deter you. But UAB offers diverse scholarship opportunities to all of its students, so if you’re willing to put in the effort, you can make your education affordable.

Popular University of Alabama – Birmingham Scholarships

A unique and popular opportunity at UAB is the Freshman Housing Scholarship. UAB offers a $2,000 credit to incoming freshmen who live on campus. This award is limited to in-state students.

Besides the Freshman Housing Scholarship, UAB divides its scholarships into three categories: Merit, Art and Performance, and Athletic.

Merit scholarships are the most substantial source of financial aid at UAB. Various awards based on your ACT score and GPA can earn you anywhere from $1,000 to full tuition. These include the Golden Excellence Scholarship, the Blazer Pride Scholarship and the Presidential Scholarship, to name a few.

While art, performance and athletic scholarships may not earn you as much money as merit awards, they have a smaller applicant pool, which may improve your changes. For example, the Edith Frohock Scholarship is reserved for junior studio art majors.

Applying for University of Alabama – Birmingham Scholarships

For maximum consideration for merit scholarships, you should be admitted to UAB by December 1 of your senior year. The university automatically considers incoming freshmen for merit scholarships, so there’s no need to apply.

Most art and performance scholarships are departmental and require a separate application. For more information on applying to these awards, contact the relevant department.

Similarly, athletic scholarships are awarded by the school’s sports programs. You should contact the coach of your sport for information on these awards.
