Virginia Scholarships

With over 165 colleges and universities, Virginia offers virtually endless possibilities for higher education. This includes old, prestigious institutions like the University of Virginia and College of William and Mary, as well as a community college system with more than 20 schools.

There’s no doubt that , Virginia colleges can help you reach your educational and professional goals. The question is, how do you pay for it?

Virginia scholarships may be the answer. There are several scholarship opportunities funded by colleges, the state and private sources that can help lessen the burden of attending college.

Popular Virginia Scholarships

Institutional aid is the first place to look for Virginia scholarships. Most colleges and universities in Virginia sponsor scholarship programs, many of which are reserved for in-state students.

An example is Virginia Polytech Institute and State University, which awards several scholarships annually. This includes the University Services Scholarship, which goes to Virginia residents who demonstrate merit and need.

Other awards limit the applicant pool further. Old Dominion University’s Regional Scholarship, for example, is reserved for students in one of 11 Virginia cities and counties.

Private organizations are another great source for Virginia scholarships. The Northern Virginia Urban League annually awards at least two of the NOVA Urban League Scholarship for African-American Students. This scholarships is reserved for African-American students from Alexandria, Arlington County and Fairfax County, but it’s just one of many privately funded Virginia scholarships.

Applying for Virginia Scholarships

If you’re studying to work in an in-demand career, you should be able to find several state-funded Virginia scholarships to apply for. The Department of Education funds programs like the Virginia Teaching Scholarship/Loan, for minority students who plan to teach in elementary and middle school.

The Virginia Department of Health sponsors many scholarship programs for students in health care. These programs include the Virginia's Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Midwife Program, Commonwealth of Virginia Nurse Educator Scholarship Program and Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarship for Licensed Practical Nurses.
