West Virginia Scholarships

If there’s a state that embodies the spirit of Appalachia, it’s West Virginia. The aptly nicknamed Mountain State features breathtaking scenery and a rich heritage of mountaineer culture.

The state also features a variety of educational opportunities, including the multi-campus West Virginia University. More importantly, it offers several scholarship and grant programs to help you pay for your education at one of these institutions.

Popular West Virginia Scholarships

The most prevalent West Virginia scholarship is the West Virginia Higher Education Grant. This grant, which is sponsored by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, assists a maximum of 9,800 in-state students per year.

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship is another popular state-funded opportunity. Unlike the Higher Education Grant, the Byrd Honors Scholarship is based on merit rather than need.

West Virginia community foundations also confer a substantial amount of financial aid each year. The Greater Kanwha Valley Foundation funds several annual scholarship programs, including the Richard C. Flint Scholarship, which is based on moral character.

Institutional aid, such as Glenville State College’s John C. Shaw Scholarship, is another excellent source for West Virginia scholarships.

Applying for West Virginia Scholarships

Some West Virginia scholarships are incentives to study high-demand careers. If you’re studying health care or science, for example, you may be able to find several scholarships to apply for. It’s no coincidence that the West Virginia Engineering, Science, and Technology Scholarship is funded by the West Virginia government.

It’s important to note that some West Virginia scholarships have specific residency requirements. This is especially true of those offered by the Greater Kanwha Valley Foundation. For example, the Ernest and Iva Mearns Scholarship is open only to graduates of Nicholas County High School.
