College Towns With Anti-Valentine’s Day Events

These five college towns know that love sometimes sucks.

By Sydney Nikols | February 17, 2017

Whether you want to party hard (like at the Flirt Fest, pictured above) or want something more demure, there are plenty of non-romantic options for Valentine's Day.

If you’re in love, Valentine’s Day can be a great excuse to eat, drink and celebrate your relationship with that special someone. If you’re not in love, Valentine’s Day can be pretty, well, depressing. Luckily, businesses and organizations everywhere are stepping up to make February 14th fun for single people, too. Check out five college towns with Anti-Valentine’s Day events that embrace those who aren’t tied down.

Though Valentines Day can be romantic, Anti-Valentines day seems just as fun.

Boston, MA

Event: Flirt Fest at The Estate

With roughly 250,000 students living in Boston, more than a few are bound to be single. For this reason, The Estate in downtown Boston is wise to host an annual Anti-Valentine’s Day Flirt Fest for all those who won’t be snuggling. The event features hors d’oeuvres, an all-night DJ, $1,000 in door prizes and a best and worst pick-up line contest. Of-age students at nearby colleges like Emerson College, Suffolk University and Northeastern University have a chance to get in on the fun.

Charlotte, NC

Event: Love Sux Party at Howl at the Moon

Chain piano bar Howl at the Moon hosts an annual Love Sux party at each of their 13 locations around the country. The Charlotte, NC, party will feature $9 Ex-Boyfriend cocktails, $6 F-Bomb shots, Anti-Valentine’s-themed games with cash and prize giveaways and free admission with a mutilated photo of your ex-lover. We suggest that single students at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, clear their schedules on February 14th.

Boulder, CO

Event: Anti-Valentine’s Day Party at Hotel Boulderado

Boulder, CO, home of the University of Colorado, Boulder, wouldn’t be widely recognized as one of America’s greatest college towns if it shunned its single students. Luckily, Hotel Boulderado has come to the rescue -- their Anti-Valentine’s Day party features drinks, food and dancing, and they even welcome couples (so long as they’re not “lovey-dovey types”).

The Hotel Boulderado was featured in Stephen King's book "Misery." That sounds pretty anti-Valentine's day to us.

Madison, WI

Event: Anti-Valentine’s Day Party at Madison Children’s Museum

It may seem counterintuitive, but Madison, WI, singles who are 21 or older can head to the Madison Children’s Museum to get their Anti-Valentine’s Day fix. The museum’s Adult Swim Anti-Valentine’s Day party invites attendees to belt break-up songs, print Anti-Valentine’s Day cards and enter a bad date story contest. We’d love to hear the tales that University of Wisconsin, Madison, students are sure to tell during that competition…

Austin, TX

Event: Anti-Valentine’s Day Party at Contigo

Austin, TX, was named the most sexually active city in the U.S. by Men’s Health and the University of Texas at Austin made our list of Colleges Where You’ll Actually Get Laid. Local restaurant Contigo capitalizes on this promiscuous culture by hosting an annual Anti-Valentine’s Day party. Don’t worry, the staff promises “there will be no hearts” and “nothing will be decorated in red.” Attendees can expect a buffet, cash bar and plenty of dancing.

Contigo is a model ranch on the outskirts of Austin, which sounds pretty romantic, BUT -- they do throw a pretty great anti-Valentine's Day party.

If you were hoping to find a significant other before February 14th, consider holding off -- it sounds like Anti-Valentine’s Day may be even more fun than Valentine’s Day itself.
